How to create a strong password in 2021 (Part 2)

thread
How to create a strong passw...
Thank you for joining us again! In part 1 we talked about when you should change your password as well as tips on reusing password and why you shouldn’t do it. Today we are going to get to commonly used passwords and best practices. So without further adieu lets get to it!

Cyber security

Commonly used passwords

According to SafetyDetectives, they analyzed over 18 million passwords to compile a list of most commonly used passwords in the world. These are passwords you should avoid.

    • 123456

    • password

    • 123456789

    • 12345

    • 12345678

    • 111111

    • 1234567890

    • 123123

    • abc123

Best password practices

When it comes to passwords, length matters. You should aim to use at least 12 characters in your password. 12 should be your minimal length, the longer the better. Consider using passphrases by mixing various words together, add a number or two in between, and a special character.

For example, the word “December” is an 8-character dictionary word. It would take hackers just hours to crack this password. But if you mix a few memorable words together, such as “December2BearSlide^^”, then it becomes a 20-character strong password. Perhaps in December you saw on TV 2 bears sliding on ice, and it made you smile.

Do not use names of popular pop culture figures or your family members. The words or passphrases should be memorable but not things directly related to you. Here’s another example, “Rocket!Night4Station#”. Perhaps you saw the recent launch of SpaceX/NASA rocket carrying 4 astronauts through the night sky towards the international space station. This is a 21-character strong password that will be very difficult to crack.

In conclusion

Having a secure password is extremely important in the year 2021. We encourage you to follow some of these guidelines to best secure your online information. If we can be of any help or if you have any follow-up questions about password security, we would love to speak with you. Please call us at 1-800-232-3989 or contact us online.

How to create a strong password in 2021 (Part 1)

thread
How to create a strong passw...
If you have not updated your passwords in over a year, now (at the start of 2021) would be a good time to consider changing them. Cybersecurity experts recommend passwords to be changed every 60-90 days. Cracking your password is how hackers can obtain your personal data. Securing your account starts with a strong password.

We are here to help you create a strong password in 2021 with a 2-part blog series.

Man looking at laptop

When should you change your password

National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) suggests forcing frequent password changes is counterproductive. It often leads to less secure passwords because users will take shortcuts and use common words they can remember. You should aim to update your password at least once a year, or anytime you suspect your account is compromised.

You should also change your password when:

    • You receive notices of data breach from stores you shop from, social media accounts you use, or financial institutions such as your credit card or bank.

    • You detect malware on your computer.

    • You’ve accessed your account using a public computer, as the computer could be infected with malware or keylogger.

    • Your email account receives tons of bounce-back emails and spam, it’s indicative your email account might be compromised.

Hacker on a laptop

Do not reuse passwords

You should have a different password for each account. When you change your password, do not reuse an old password because if a hacker cracks one of your old accounts, they will most definitely try the old password when attempting to crack your new accounts.

Say you had created an account with a department store many years back, you had forgotten you have that account. That particular department store had their data breached, and hackers obtained the password you used with that account. If you have reused the same password elsewhere, you are now at risk to be hacked. Even if you had changed the password slightly, often people would add a number at the end of their password when reusing a password. Since this is a common practice, hackers will try this when attempting to hack into your accounts.

3 Online Tools for Restaurants During the Covid-19 Pandemic

thread
3 Online Tools for Restaurants...
We may have turned the calendar to a new year, but we are still facing the same challenges that we had in 2020. Many industries have been hit hard, one of the hardest hit has been restaurants.

At PSPinc, we have developed a number of tools designed and developed to help struggling restaurants.

Customer feedback for your restaurant with Opinion Stand

Opinion Stand Customer Feedback

Price: Pay what you can

A service that allows restaurants to embed QR codes or text message codes in their posters, menus, table-tents, to-go flyers, etc. A patron simply scans or enters the code, click on an icon to rate their experience, and provide their information and additional comments on their service.

Restaurant owners can quickly evaluate their customer service, delivery experience, quality of food, and so much more! On top of that, they gain valuable customer information for future marketing and promotional efforts to encourage return visitors.

It is totally free-to-use and once you sign up you can quickly add menu categories and each of your dishes. For each dish you can include an image, description, allergen information, and price.

Once created, restaurants can embed a QR code, or provide a URL to their digital menu web page anywhere and everywhere. It works perfect on your Google business page, your website (we will get to that later), coupons, promotional ads, and so much more.

PSPinc What’s New Newsletter Vol.42 "Why Bloguru is Free"

thread
PSPinc What’s N...
Vol.42

We launched our ad-free blog site, bloguru.com, on September 1st, 2004 and have been running it ever since. Bloguru is not run by advertisements like other blog websites, so you won’t see any ads within the system. This means that we do not receive any income from running Bloguru. So why do we run Bloguru?

We are in the business of hosting websites. We have 45,000 domains in our data center, mostly in Japan and the US - this is our source of income. In addition to hosting, we also design and develop websites.

Needless to say, it is important for a website to be seen by many people. As a way to attract more people to your website, you need to be listed on search engines like Google. It’s not easy to be ranked at the top of search engines with just your website alone.

So how do you promote your website? We developed Bloguru as a way to attract people to your company or an individual and then lead them to your website. The absence of advertisements makes it easier for search engines to find and list you.

There are many people who think that Bloguru is not effective. There are many people who believe that having everything on their own website is better for search sites. However, the content written on Bloguru is often ranked higher by search engines. Please give it a try.

Bloguru is also available for free to those of you who are not hosted by us. To sign up, please visit https://bloguru.com.

ImaMenu contact-less digital restaurant menu released for free to help restaurants during the Covid-19 Pandemic

thread
ImaMenu contact-less digital re...
We have released an all-new service designed specifically to assist restaurants during the Covid-19 pandemic.

ImaMenu is a contact-less digital restaurant menu application. The web-based tool was developed in an effort to help restaurants combat Covid-19 by moving away from paper-based menu systems and avoid direct physical contact with customers where possible.

With ImaMenu, restaurant owners have the power to create a digital menu complete with pictures, descriptions, prices, and allergen information. They can then embed an automatically generated QR code into posters and flyers. This allows customers to access a menu directly from their smartphones.

ImaMenu works on any modern device and supports multiple languages for bilingual businesses. Restaurant owners can group and organize their dishes into various categories and add an unlimited number of menu items.

Due to the ongoing global Covid-19 pandemic, Pacific Software Publishing, Inc. has made ImaMenu completely free-to-use in an effort to support restaurants who are struggling during these difficult and uncertain times. Restaurant owners can sign up directly at ImaMenu.com.

If you are a restaurant owner or manager and want to give ImaMenu a try - it is totally free! What are you waiting for?

2021 Pantone Colors of the Year

thread
2021 Pantone Colors of the Year
At the end of every year, the Pantone Color Institute picks the "Color of the Year". The process isn't arbitrary and they take into consideration a trend analysis. It is a result of experts reviewing world influences within many genres such as art, fashion, entertainment, and travel to name a few. They also take into consideration the 'emotional history' of the color.

It's not surprising that because of the year we have had in 2020, the selection process for 2021 was anything but normal. Instead of choosing 1 Pantone color of the year, the Institute chose 2! The official colors of the year are Pantone 17-5104 Ultimate Gray and Pantone 13-0647 Illuminating (yellow).

To the average person, it may represent perhaps a gray start to the year with the "illuminating" hope of what could come.

In reality, gray represents wisdom and dependability. Illuminating is symbolic of energy and light (no surprise). The pair represents how we need optimism and positivity, but to get there we need strength and wisdom.

What do you think of the official 2021 Pantone Colors of the Year?

At PSPinc we focus on design when we develop websites every day. So we are always looking at future trends and technologies.

If you have a website that is in need of a design refresh, let us know.

We have professional designers on staff that are here to help you start 2021 off right. You could say we have the wisdom and dependability of Ultimate Gray to build your next Illuminating website!

PSPinc What’s New Newsletter Vol.41 "Post-coronavirus"

thread
PSPinc What’s N...
Vol. 41

The United States and the world are in the midst of the coronavirus epidemic. The number of people infected with the disease is higher than when the virus first became widespread. The number of people not only infected, but also brought into the ICU, is seriously high. The presidential election was held during this current situation. There appears to be irregularities that have come out that are not being reported in the media. The United States is becoming more and more divided.

Even if Biden were to become the president, at least half of the country would not admit it. On the contrary, if Trump remains president, the other half will not. In that sense, the media will have no choice but to continue with its posture that there was no election fraud, but it is certain to backfire on itself as well.

Given this context, the good news is that the distribution of the vaccine has begun. This will reduce the number of people infected with the coronavirus and reduce its impact on the economy. It won't be long before people can leave the United States and go to Japan. I hope that this will happen soon.

What will your business do once the coronavirus pandemic is over? Are you going to do the same thing you did before coronavirus? Are you thinking of something new? My company is a software development company, so the only thing we do is think about and come up with new services. Also, the software we develop is designed to encourage more people to use our data centers and rental servers. Our post-coronavirus project is to think of new services, develop them, and introduce them to you before coronavirus is over.

What do you have in mind for post-coronavirus? By the way, if you need to update your website or develop a cloud database program, please contact us.
