PSPINC What's New Newsletter Vol. 90 "Password Management Service"

Pacific Software Publishing, Inc. is pleased to announce the free beta release of Pass Wizard, a password management service that has been available in beta since November 4th, 2021. It is free of charge to use, so please try it out. The setup requires user authentication with a cell phone. Also, even if you have access to your account with your login credentials, there are optional security setting enhancements to require authentication with your cell phone to gain access.

The free beta release is a two-user version (admin account and regular user). A great feature of Pass Wizard is that it allows group subscriptions and the ability to share passwords within a group. For example, you can keep your passwords to yourself, but share things like your company's WiFi login, or other shared passwords, with the group to access files or accounts.

I don't want to explain all of the features of Pass Wizard here because you will understand them once you use it. As for the price, we are planning to keep it under $20 per account per year even after the beta. If you would like to try it for free, please click the link below.

How do you keep track of your passwords? I used to store all of my passwords in Numbers (Apple's version of Excel) and protected that document with a password. I kept it on a cloud drive (iCloud) so that I could access it from all my devices (Mac, iPad, iPhone). Many people manage their passwords in the same way, either by putting them in the cloud or by writing them down in a notebook instead of storing them online.

The application or browser you are using usually remembers the password, and the password is entered on its own. This means that if something goes wrong and you need to enter your password, you will most likely have forgotten it. To prevent this, many people use easy-to-remember strings of letters and numbers as passwords, and then use those passwords on multiple sites. So, if your email address and password are exposed on one site, others can use the same combination on many other sites.

All current services created by Pacific Software Publishing, Inc. require that passwords be at least 8 characters long and contain upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols. However, in the past, passwords such as 000000 or “password” could have been allowed. Although we promote not using the same password for multiple sites and using complex passwords, it goes without saying that this can be cumbersome for users.

To solve these problems, Pacific Software Publishing, Inc. has been developing a password management service. It is now finally ready for alpha release. It's a system that covers all of the security features available today, and it's currently free for anyone to sign up. If you decide to sign up, please let us know how it works for you. At present, the interface is only available in English, but we hope to add Japanese language support in the beta version.

How to backup your WordPress website

Your WordPress website consists of files, images, and a database. Your database contains all of the content within your website. This includes every post, every link, and every comment. If your database gets corrupted, you could lose everything without a backup. Backing up your WordPress website regularly will ensure peace of mind.

Automated WordPress Backup Plugins

To automatically backup your WordPress website, you will need to install a plugin. One highly rated plugin is the UpdraftPlus WordPress Backup Plugin. In your WordPress admin, click on Plugins -> Add New. Under search keyword, type in Updraft.

Click Install Now, then Activate. Once activated, you can find UpdraftPlus under Settings -> UpdraftPlus Backups.

The first thing you will want to do is to click on the Settings tab and set up your backup schedules. Weekly backups should suffice for most websites. However, if you make frequent daily updates, you may opt for daily backups.

By default, backups are saved locally for your website. You should choose a remote storage option so your backups are safe from drive crashes. Plus saving backups locally could fill up your disk quota for your website, giving you less space to work with. UpdraftPlus Backups let you choose from a wide selection of remote storage options. Select the option that works for you.

Manual Backups

We recommend that you make a manual backup prior to making a large update to your WordPress website. This way if you make a mistake, or installed a plugin/theme that breaks your website, you can easily revert your changes.

Click on Backup Now on the main UpdraftPlus page. If something happens after a large update, and you wish to revert your site to a prior state, select the backup you wish to restore to and click on Restore.

Tip: Upgrading your WordPress version and plugins is critical to maintaining security, but it does come with risks to what it does to your website’s look and functionality. Securing your WordPress Website

To update your WordPress admin password:

1. Click on Users, then Profile.

2. Mouse down and click Set New Password, give it a strong password, then click on Update Profile below.

Install Wordfence Security Plugin

Wordfence is a popular firewall security plugin with built-in malware scanning. It has over 150 million downloads and is completely free to use. Wordfence will help you secure your WordPress website, prevent bruteforce login attacks, scan your installation for vulnerabilities, and email you reports of activities and warnings.

To install Wordfence:

1. Mouse over to Plugins, and click Add New.

2. Type in Wordfence under keyword search box, it will display Wordfence.

When you receive payment card information online, there are set of rules you must follow to protect the security of the card holder’s information. PCI DSS stands for “Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard” and the rules are very strict.

How does PSPinc comply with PCI DSS?

We at PSPinc, make sure that we do not store any payment card information such as the “Card Number”, “Exp. Date”, or “Security Code”. We ask for those items when customers make a payment but they are either entered one time to pass to the card processing system and destroyed or we let the customer enter that information directly to the card processing company such as a bank, Authorize.net and PayPal.

During the online transaction, we will not store (save) any payment card information on our servers. In addition to that, we have limited number of people who can access the customer information. The information that we store about customers are accessed only on a “need-to-know” basis with secure login from within the company (or VPN environment) only.

This information is not accessible from the Internet. Our datacenter is also PCI DSS compliant. People without proper ID and authorization cannot have any physical access to our datacenter. We take PCI DSS seriously and we do our best to not store payment card information and protect customer information with a very strict, monitored environment.

By the time you read this newsletter, we will have began alpha testing for one of our new products currently in development. The name of this service is Pass Wizard and it is a secure password storage service.

We've been providing website and email hosting services since 1996. Since our initial launch, many websites and emails have been exploited by password leaks. In 2020, this trend shows no signs of stopping. Caused by advancements in technology, passwords are easier to break these days. In this environment, there is a growing movement to make passwords stronger.

The world of password security has changed as such that you have to use upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols in passwords. Whereas in the past you used your own easy-to-remember passwords such as birthdays, pet names, and family member names. However, passwords are now required to be hard to remember. For example, k$4kJ-K(776-><gvG) is a great password, but I don't think many people will be able to memorize something that complex by themselves.

The system we are developing is a password storage system. In addition to requiring valid login credentials to access stored passwords, you can also set up 2-factor authentication so your credentials can only be accessed with a valid mobile device. In short, the system is designed to prevent others from opening the vault, even if your password becomes compromised. There are many other things we did to keep your password data safe.
