80% of Taiwanese would 'fight' if China invaded, poll finds... raising awareness of the danger

Nearly 80 percent of Taiwanese people would fight for Taiwan in the event of a military attack by China, according to a new survey. This is because China, reacting to the sudden proximity of the U.S. and Taiwan, has stepped up its threats of force, including repeated military exercises around the Taiwan Strait, and the sense of risk is growing in Taiwan.

　According to a mid-month poll conducted by the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, a think tank affiliated with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, 79.8 percent of respondents said they would "fight for Taiwan" if China invaded the island.

　In a similar poll released on March 24 by the Cross-Strait Development Research Foundation, a think tank affiliated with China's Kuomintang (KMT), Taiwan's largest opposition party, which leaned toward China, 77.6 percent said they would fight for Taiwan.

　In a previous poll conducted by a Taiwanese television station, 23.6 percent of respondents said they would "fight" for a similar question in 2018, compared with 32.7 percent in 19 years.

　Commenting on these changes in attitudes among Taiwanese, political commentator Wu Chia-lung said, "The impact of China's implementation of the 'Hong Kong National Security Law' (in June this year) on the Taiwanese people was so great that many of them felt threatened that if they were annexed by China, it would be like Hong Kong (repression). He also analyzed that "more people became more confident in 'defending Taiwan' after the U.S. Trump administration made clear that it would support Taiwan through arms sales and other measures.

　与党、民主進歩党系のシンクタンク、台湾民主基金会が今月中旬に行った世論調査で、中国が台湾に侵攻した場合、「台湾のために戦う」と答えた人は７９・８％」にも上った。

　さらに、中国寄りだった台湾最大の野党、中国国民党系のシンクタンク、両岸発展研究基金会が２４日発表した同様の世論調査でも「戦う」との回答は７７・６％に達している。

　台湾のテレビ局がかつて行った世論調査では、同様の設問に「戦う」との回答が２０１８年に２３・６％。１９年では３２・７％だった。

　台湾人のこうした意識変化について、政治評論家の呉嘉隆氏は、「中国が（今年６月に）『香港国家安全維持法』を施行したことが台湾人に与えた衝撃は大きく、中国に併合されれば香港（への抑圧）のようになってしまうと危機感を感じた人が多い」と指摘。さらに、「トランプ米政権が武器売却などを通じて台湾を支援する姿勢を明確にしたことで、『台湾防衛』に自信を深めた人が増えた」とも分析した。
