利益相反（Conflict of Interest）とは、異なる関係者の間で、利益や目標が対立する状況を指します。具体的な例として、原告を代表する弁護士が被告の弁護士になることはできません。これは、公平性を確保し、同じ事件で相反する当事者を代理することから生じる潜在的な偏りを防ぐためです。つまり、利益相反は、異なる当事者の利益や目標が食い違っており、一方の当事者が自身の利益や目標を追求することが、他方の当事者の利益や目標の達成を妨げる状況を指します。

A conflict of interest, known as "利益相反" in Japanese, refers to a situation where there is a clash between the interests or goals of two or more parties. It means that pursuing the interests or goals of one party hinders the achievement of the interests or goals of another party.

For example, in the legal context, a conflict of interest arises when an attorney representing the plaintiff cannot also serve as the attorney for the defendant. This is to ensure impartiality and prevent any potential bias that may arise from representing conflicting parties in the same case.

In essence, a conflict of interest occurs when there is a divergence in the interests or goals of different parties, and one party's pursuit of their interests or goals impedes the achievement of the interests or goals of another party.
