Can you tell* what`s interesting in this photo?
Shall I tell** you?
Well, if you look carefully, you`ll notice that the shed is actually a converted train carriage. I can`t tell* what it`s used for now, but it has windows & curtains, so maybe someone uses it as a bedroom. Cool! (Actually, it`s made of metal, so in summer it probably gets pretty hot.)
Vocabulary:
- *tell... = notice, know, understand
- **tell (+誰かに)... = say, teach
Today I went to Ohirashima Park in Ichinomiya with my son to have lunch & look at its steam train.
Japanese people often call this kind of steam train a `degoichi`. At first I was confused because I couldn`t find this word in my dictionary. Finally I found out (= learned) that it refers to the make/serial number; "de" = the letter D, "go" = 5, "ichi" = 1. Look in the photo -you can see the serial number D51718.
These trains were made in Japan between 1936 & 1945, so this one must be old. However, look at the wheels - so clean & shiny!
There are a couple of steam trains still working in Japan, but they don`t run very often. I want to ride on one. Maybe this year I`ll get a chance.
Tony Abbott wasn`t the only big winner last weekend. Tokyo won its bid to host the 2020 Olympics. Everybody on Japanese TV seemed really happy about it.
I guess they never use the Tokyo subway.
Do you want to go to an Olympic event in Tokyo in 2020?
One of Owen`s favourite books is The Little Red Caboose, so he was excited when we found two black cabooses near Ogaki Station. I`ve also seen the same type of caboose outside Leaf Walk Shopping Centre in Inazawa. I think they look pretty cool - old, tough & practical, but also kind of cute. Just like me! Right? Right? No?
