Challenge!

Challenge!

I made this. It`s a kind of tool. Do you know what it is for (なんのために)? I`ll give you a hint: It`s for opening something...

My father gave me this idea. Thanks, dad - it worked!

UPDATE:

I put the answer in `comments`

Beach Wood

thread
Beach Wood

This is some beach wood I picked up on the weekend. I like making things from beach wood, but I`m wondering (かしら) what to make. In the past I`ve made various (いろいろ) things, like:

- a bird house that birds won`t go near
- a toy that my kids won`t play with
- a bookcase that my wife won`t let me bring in the house

For now (とりあえず) I think I`ll just leave it all in the driveway to annoy my wife.

Elections

thread
Elections
I`m glad the election (せんきょ) is finished. I hate those noisy vans which drive around making a lot of noise. They`re really annoying (いらいら). And isn`t it illegal (いほう) to wave your hand outside a car window while driving? Hey, guys - white gloves are not magic - they will not prevent an injury!

Anyway, did you vote (とうひょう) yesterday? There will be an Australian election soon. Mmm... who will I vote for...?

Gifu Teragoya Yukata Party

thread
Gifu Teragoya Yukata Party
Thanks everyone who came to the party on Saturday night. I hope you had a good time. I really enjoyed myself and I think my two sons did too. They enjoyed playing the games, & also `helping` other people play them (actually, getting in the way; じゃまします). They also enjoyed getting in dad`s way while he was trying to MC...

Staff will probably upload some party photos to our Teragoya website soon. Please look.

And please come to our next party!

Bookcase

thread
Bookcase
The shop beside Ginan Teragoya is a home interior business. Recently they were selling pieces of leftover (のこり) wood for 50yen each. That`s cheap, so I wanted to buy them, but I didn`t have any idea what to make with them. Finally, I noticed that we had some old books in baskets on the floor in our school lobby. They were kind of in the way (in the way = じゃま) So I decided to make a small bookcase to hold those books. I`m happy with the result. It looks neat.

Iwato Festival

thread
Iwato Festival
Yesterday was festival day in Iwato, where I live. Last year the weather wasn`t so good, so not so many people came. Yesterday the weather was sunny & there were a lot of people!
As usual, there were 3 floats [dashi だし], some decorated horses, & various stalls [yatai やたい].
I breed [hanshoku suru?] killi fish [medaka めだか] at home, but I`m not so interested in goldfish. However my son really wanted to catch one at the goldfish stall at the festival. He couldn`t catch one himself, so the stall owner just gave him one. When we got home, I put it in a fish tank [suisouすいそう] & today it`s still alive, but I wonder how long it will survive [ikirareru]. How long do you think?

My New, You-Beaut Commute Route

thread
My New, You-Beaut Commute R...

This week I started working 3 days a week at our Ginan school. I go there by bicycle. Riding to Ichinomiya school from my home used to take 20 minutes. Ginan is much further but I was surprised to find it only takes me 10 minutes longer to get there. Also, on the way I can enjoy some new sights, such as a nice, wide view when I cross The Kiso River.

I like riding - it`s good exercise & less stressful, for me, than driving. But it`s not much fun when it rains, & rainy season is coming soon...

Do you like riding? Why/Why not?

Tera-chan

thread
Tera-chan

I forgot to tell you about Teragoya`s new mascot, `Tera` (or `Tera-chan`). Students, staff & teachers created designs, & this was the winning one. It`s by Ichinomiya staff member, Erina. Nice work, Erina!
Now you can see Tera-chan on various Teragoya signs, notices & goods. He looks great, doesn`t he?
But I`m still a little disappointed my design wasn`t chosen as the winner. Do you want to see my design? Really? Oh, okay. I`ll put it in `Comments` for you to look at.
Which do you prefer? My design or Erina`s?

Graduation

thread
Graduation

At the end of last year I finished studying my Master of Education degree. On Saturday I attended my graduation ceremony in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (there was also a ceremony in Australia, where my university is located, but I thought it would be fun to attend the one in KL).

There were about 250 graduates at the ceremony, & I think about 99% were Malaysian. I didn`t realise my university had so many Malaysian students! I talked to some of them & I was impressed by their high level of English. English is used much more in Malaysia than Japan. For example, on the radio I heard two DJs speaking English only, even though they were Malaysian.

Doing my degree was a good experience, & I`m sure it has made me a better teacher, but I`m glad I`ve finished it. It ate up a lot of my free time & was quite stressful.

More Kyoto Trip Pictures

thread
More Kyoto Trip Pictures
Here are some more photos from our school trip to Kyoto. As you can see, most of the girls wore shawls. James also wore one around his neck, like a scarf (muffler). I should have worn one too - it was pretty cold outside.

I think women`s kimonos are warmer than men`s, because women also have to wear a lot of special underwear [shitagi]. Unfortunately I didn`t wear enough warm underwear under my kimono. I`ll remember that next time.

Have you ever rented a kimono? Or do you have your own?
