Music You Might Like - Chris Isaak

thread
Music You Might Like - Chris ...
To celebrate my graduation, here`s a song called `Graduation Day` by one of my all-time favourite musicians, Chris Isaak: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJBH8uu5qIM

This guy has written so many good songs. This is his most famous song, and my favourite, `Wicked Game`: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAOxCqSxRD0

Those songs are a bit depressing, but this one, `Can`t Do a Thing` is nice & relaxing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7e8wjdugnNw

I also really like `Lie to Me`: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GkYXDw-dzY

Not only is Chris Isaak handsome, charming, & talented, he can also speak Japanese! Really! Check out this song, `So Lovely is the Night`, sung in Japanese: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JxZaRb_XnQ

I haven`t been to many concerts in my life, but I saw Chris Isaak & his band play at Hard Rock Cafe in Bangkok about 15 years ago. I was standing by the bar just 10 metres from the stage. During their performance, suddenly the saxophone player came to the bar, climbed up on the counter & started walking along it, while playing the saxophone. Me & other drinkers had to quickly move our drinks! Then Chris Isaak followed him, playing his guitar! Actually, his guitar was electric, & he had to unplug it to go to the bar, so he wasn`t really playing it. But it was still a great performance! Afterwards he signed autographs & I got him to sign my entry ticket. I still have it somewhere.

What a great night. What a great guy!

Music You Might Like - Daniel Romano

thread
Music You Might Like - Daniel...
In my last blog post I told you about visiting my aunt`s farm. After reading that, I guess you`re in the mood for some country music, right? Right? No? Okay, maybe not, but I still think you might like this song by a Canadian guy called Daniel Romano. Sorry - the music video is weird (= strange), but I like the song, & I thought you might too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=no3tNgZXIvE

If you like the sound of that, here`s another nice song of his: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpzl1VI4f-A

And another! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PYRExYcp_E

Music You Might Like - Boz Scaggs

thread
Music You Might Like - Boz S...
I`m sick at the moment, and feeling a little blue, so... let`s check out some blues music! This is "Somebody Loan Me a Dime" by Boz Scaggs, from early in his career (1969). Later, around 1976, he changed his music style and his image and that`s when he became really big (=famous) and had several hits. I remember hearing them on the radio when I was a kid.

To be honest, I`m not a big fan of blues music. I didn`t listen to it much when I was growing up in Australia, where it`s less popular than in America. Also, I think it`s hard to get into (=become interested in) blues when you have a steady job, nice accommodation, and a wife who hasn`t left you for another man!

Wikipedia says Boz Scaggs used to be popular in Japan. Have you heard of him?

Music You Might Like - Antenna

thread
Music You Might Like - Antenna
To celebrate the arrival of warm weather, here`s a song called `Come on Spring` by Australian group Antenna, from 1998.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zq_x9kLQLLg&feature=related

There are things I like & don`t like about this song & video:
- I like the song.
- I don`t like the singer.
- I like the guitarist – Dave Faulkner from excellent 80`s/90`s (& recently reformed) band The Hoodoo Gurus.
- I don`t like his cap though (he`s trying to hide that he`s going bald [hage])
- I`m not sure about [bimyo] his shirt either.
- I`m definitely not sure about [sugoi bimyo] the singer`s shirt - wow!
- The lyrics are a bit rubbish: “Come on spring. Do your thing. What`s your story? Come on spring. Do your thing. Have you got something for me?" Yawn [akubi].
- But, as I said, I like the song. I hope you do too.

Music You Might Like - Cold Chisel

thread
Music You Might Like - Cold C...
Today is Australia Day, so to mark the occasion, here are a couple of songs by a famous Australian band called Cold Chisel. They were huge (= very popular) about 30 years ago. Then they split up.
Then they reformed.
Then split up again.
Then reformed.
Then split up.
Then finally last year they reformed again - Yay! They`re all pretty old now (& the drummer passed away last year), but I still like their music. Mostly it`s hard rock, but you might find these three songs a little easier on the ears:

Choir Girl (1979): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzyDVcnLJ7U

My Baby (1980): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJLy_3LV7K0

Flame Trees (1984): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILd1O44BDqc

Happy Australia Day!

Music You Might Like - Adele

thread
Music You Might Like - Adele
This is "Hometown Glory" from 2007 by English singer/songwriter Adele Akins.

Songs like this make me wish I could play the piano.

Can you play the piano? Do you still play or did you stop when you were about 16, like many Japanese people I`ve met?

Sample Lyrics:
I've been walking in the same way as I did
Missing out the cracks in the pavement
And tutting my heel and strutting my feet

Music You Might Like - Badly ...
These are two songs by English singer/songwriter Damon Gough (his stage name is Badly Drawn Boy). The music videos are pretty funny.

"Something To Talk About" from 2002. This song was used in the movie "About A Boy", Have you seen it? Hugh Grant is in it. I recommend it!

"Disillusion" from 2004.

Sample Lyrics:
Seems you created your own illusion
Fuelled by an image of me

Music You Might Like - Paul Kelly

thread
Music You Might Like - Paul Ke...
Paul Kelly is an Australian singer/songwriter I`ve liked for a long time. He`s starting to get old now - like me & Jack Bauer - but he`s still making nice music. This is a song called "King of Fools" from 2004.

Chorus:

I`m the king
I`m the king of fools
The King Kong king of fools

(full lyrics are here.)

Another song of his you might like: "Before Too Long" (+ lyrics) from 1986. This song & music video makes me homesick for Australia.

Music You Might Like - Ryan Adams

thread
Music You Might Like - Ryan ...
This is a new running feature on my blog. I hope you like it.

I like various kinds of music, and you probably wouldn`t like a lot of it (Gifu teacher Henriette, for example, was disgusted to find me listening to "Light rock & easy listening 70s hits" once on internet radio). However, I will choose songs I think you might like.

Remember, if you`re studying English, listening to English language songs is an interesting way to learn new vocabulary (=words) and improve your listening skills.

This song is "Two" (2007) by American singer Ryan Adams (not Bryan Adams).

Sample Lyrics:
It takes two and it used to take only one

Another Ryan Adams song you might like: "This House is Not For Sale"

Let me know what you think in comments. And if you want to read the full song lyrics, just do a google search - easy!
