諦めてはならない

何事も諦めてはならない。

曇り空の写真は、本日日没前の30分ぐらい前に撮影したもの。
この日も夕日を見ることはできないと判断して、せめてわずかな赤色を求めて高台に出て撮影したもの。

その30分後、息子から夕日を見ろ、との緊急メッセージ。
高台に再度登ってみると、見事にあかね色に染まった夕焼けが広がっている。感動。

昨日シアトルダウンタウンにある日本国領事館に行った。
領事館が入居しているはずのユニオンビルディングの入り口は封鎖されていた。しかもGoogleに出てくる領事館の住所は、隣のブロックに変更されている。その入り口も封鎖されていて、どこ回ってもドアはロックしていた。

ぐるぐるとブロックを早足で歩きながら入り口を探す。
総領事館に2回も電話してメッセージを残した。
この日のアポイントメントを取り付けるのに3週間待たされたのだ。数分でも遅刻ゆえに門前払いを食ったら春の日本行きが台無しになる。娘のパスポート取得のために、その誕生日に合わせて、10年間有効のパスポートを申請のための、この日だったんだ。

すると、ロックされているドアの内側から出てきた紳士が、1つのドアを指して入り口を教えてくれた。そこは出口専用と書いてあるのに、そこしか入りようが無いらしい。

領事館の職員によると、2年ほど前にこのコンベンションセンタービルディングの中に引っ越したのだと言う。
それを知らずにだいぶ探し回ったことを話しした。
アポイントメント前に窓口まで到着できたが、たとい数十分遅れても、受付はしてくれると話してくださった。

それもそのはずでしょう。
その日は５件しか旅券申請者の予約がないのに、1日の業務時間をたった５件のためだけに当てているユルユル行政サービスの実態を見てしまった。ちなみに私の申請時間は15分以内で終わった。
それならアポイントメントを数週間先にせずとも良かったのでは？

以前の領事館では、行政サービスの部屋から廊下反対側に日本文化広報室があって、その中で時を過ごすのが楽しみだった。
新しい引っ越し先に、そのような広報の部屋がなくなったのは、予算削減のためでしょうか。

とにかく懸案だったパスポートの申請が無事終了。

何事も、障害にぶつかり焦ることがあっても、諦めてはならないと改めて知った。

We must not give up on anything.

The cloudy sky photo was taken about 30 minutes before sunset today.
I knew I wouldn't be able to see the sunset this evening, so I went out to the high ground to get at least a glimpse of red.

Half an hour later, I received an urgent message from my son, telling me to watch the sunset.
I climbed up to the place again and found the sunset beautifully tinted in red. I was impressed.

Yesterday, I went to the Japanese Consulate in downtown Seattle.
The entrance to the Union Building, where the consulate is supposed to be located, was blocked off. Moreover, the address of the consulate on Google has been changed to the next block. The entrance to the building was also blocked off, and the doors were locked everywhere I turned.

I walked around the block in circles at a fast pace to find the entrance.
I called the consulate twice and left messages.
I had to wait three weeks to get an appointment for this day. If I were to be turned away because I was even a few minutes late, my spring trip to Japan would be ruined. This was the day I needed to apply for my daughter's passport, valid for 10 years, to coincide with her birthday.

Then a gentleman came out from inside the locked door and pointed to one door and told me the entrance. It was marked for exits only, but it seemed to be the only way in.

According to the consulate staff, they moved into this convention center building about two years ago.
I told her that I didn't know that, and that I had looked around for a long time.
I was able to get to the counter before my appointment time, but she told me that even if I was a few minutes late, they would still accept me.

I guess that's just as well.
They had only five appointments for passport applicants that day, but I saw the reality of the government service that allocates a day's work time for just five cases. Incidentally, my application took less than 15 minutes.
If that's the case, you didn't need to make appointments weeks in advance, did you?

In the previous consulate, there was a Japanese culture and public relations room on the other side of the hallway from the administrative services room, and I looked forward to spending time in that room.
I wonder if it is due to budget cuts that the new place they moved to no longer has such a public relations room.

Anyway, the pending passport application was completed successfully.

I learned once again that you should never give up on anything, even if you run into obstacles and get impatient.
