The Concept of Business

When I think about the forms that businesses take in the 21st century, two words come to my mind: on-demand and subscription. If you can understand these and incorporate them within your own company going forward, a new form of business is born.

What is on-demand?

Providing a service that is needed when it is needed and without a particularly high price. For example, in the U.S., until the 20th century, there were two types of hospitals: regular and emergency. A regular hospital is where you make an appointment and visit at the appointed date and time. An emergency hospital is where you are taken by ambulance immediately.

Let's say you have a non-life-threatening injury, it would take too much time to make an appointment at a hospital. However, there are times when it is not necessary to call an ambulance either. In such cases, a type of hospital called Urgent Care has emerged in the United States. This is a medical facility where you can pop in without an appointment, and no emergency fees are required. This is what on-demand is all about.

What is a subscription model?

Let's use the same hospital/medical example. When you go to the hospital, you make an appointment according to your needs, However, it is not uncommon for some hospitals and doctors to not be able to make an appointment for weeks. People who have a lot of money are not satisfied with this type of system.

Some hospitals and doctors offer a service where you can pay a monthly membership fee (in addition to the general treatment fee) to be seen immediately. This is what is called a medical subscription service.

As you can see, even if you look at the medical industry alone, business is changing in the 21st century. Why don't you think about how you can incorporate on-demand and subscription services into your business?
