Why take a business trip to Japan?

Since Japan opened its borders at the end of last year after its isolation due to Covid-19, I have already made three business trips there. With remote work so widespread these days, you might wonder what the point of traveling to Japan is, but talking on the phone or communicating via video conference has a completely different impact than face-to-face. When you talk in person, there’s more input that goes into it that you cannot feel online beyond words, like the atmosphere, the environment, facial expressions, and attitude.

In addition, we can also talk about difficult topics that are hard to discuss online when meeting in person. So, I think going on a business trip is well worth the expense. It also lets people know we’re serious about what we do.

Now, business trips to Japan cost much more than before the Covid-19 pandemic. First, there’s the cost of travel. I used to fly business class, but recently, I’ve started using economy (premium economy) because the price went up. The cost of business class in the old days and the current cost of the premium economy class are almost the same price. Then there’s the cost of hotels, which I think has gone up by more than 50% compared to prices before Covid-19. Nowadays, I often stay at business hotels instead of hotels like New Otani.

Public transportation (airplanes, trains, buses, and cabs in Japan) and other forms of transportation, however, don’t seem to have increased in price as much. But unlike the U.S., people use public transportation more often in Japan. If you really want to do business in Japan, it’s worthwhile to make a business trip to Japan even with these expenses in mind. It also isn’t a bad idea to visit Japan once and experience Japan firsthand.
