People Only Use Smartphones
During my business trip to Japan, I gained several insights. One of them is that many people have their smartphones in their hands at all times and are always connected online. From browsing websites, using social media, and exchanging emails to shopping, they do most things on their smartphones. While they may use a computer for work, many do not use one for personal use or even own one.
I also found that in Japan, most communication is done through an application called LINE. This is a phenomenon that has yet to be seen overseas. Although there is an application similar to LINE called WhatsApp, it has fewer users than LINE. What is even more surprising is that LINE is used not only by individuals but also by corporations and local governments.
Additionally, I was surprised to find out that LINE is not an application developed in Japan. In the U.S., TikTok has been called into question due to security concerns. While there should be similar issues with LINE, an interesting situation has emerged in Japan, where even local governments use LINE. At first glance, Japanese people seem concerned about personal information and security. However, in reality, they may not see LINE as a problem or be ignorant of the possibility of information being leaked.
Perhaps the saying "when in Rome, do as the Romans do" or "if you can't beat them, join them" may be true. The current situation in Japan is that smartphone usage is very high, especially for LINE. This trip made me realize that we need to consider smartphones first when developing software and applications in the future.
