Japan's Smartphone Society: Everything is Done with a Smartphone

While in the U.S., most things are accomplished using a laptop and a web browser, in Japan, the predominant trend involves relying heavily on smartphones. During my recent business trip to Japan, I found myself frequently using my smartphone in lieu of a laptop. This experience prompted me to ponder why the Japanese population tends to prefer the combination of smartphones and apps over laptop.

To begin with, there are numerous situations in Japan where facilities for using a laptop are not readily available, even at home. I particularly noticed this limitation during my stay at a business hotel this time. In essence, there is restricted space for setting up a laptop or organizing documents.

Moreover, it's common in Japan to use smartphones on public transportation like trains, buses, and taxis to send emails, chat, check social media, and enjoy videos when not driving. During such scenarios, the use of laptop is limited. Additionally, as company-owned laptops are typically not for personal use, many individuals resort to their smartphones to access information even during work hours.

Given these circumstances, the Japanese environment tends to lean towards the utilization of applications designed for smartphones. When developing services and systems for the Japanese market, we recognized the importance of concentrating on smartphone functionality. Although I personally have a preference for a laptop with a large screen (being a Mac user), I came to realize that there are instances when generating ideas and working on a smartphone can be challenging.
