Employee Spotlight: Meet Brandon

thread
Employee Spotlight: Meet Bran...
At PSPINC, we pride ourselves on offering our customers the best customer support. This is thanks to our amazing support staff. In this series, we will highlight and showcase a number of those friendly faces who are standing by to take your call or email, help with your IT problems, and assist with your online solutions.
Brandon

Meet Brandon

Brandon is our Customer & Web Service Lead. We sat down with Brandon and asked him a series of questions to get to know him better!

Q: What is it you do at PSPINC?
A: I work more in the typical customer service job, interacting with customers and assisting them with their needs across all our services. I also work with our R&D teams on design and development projects.

--

Q: What does a typical day on the job look like for you?
A: Running through project lists and following up with respective internal teams or customers, day-to-day customer inquiries, service updating, and billing, monitoring customer services, creating project/service proposals and quotations, web services research.

--

Q: How did you first learn about PSPINC? What drew you to the position?
A: I was set up with an interview via a recruitment company. The position was bilingual English/Japanese which is something I had been wanting to do because of my Japanese degree from college. Having the business be Japanese-owned sounded like a great way to get this experience regardless of the specific position.

--

Q: What’s your favorite part about working here?
A: Being able to use Japanese on a daily basis – this has helped me maintain and even improve my fluency since college and it’s a fun language to use.

--

Q: How has PSPINC helped you in your career development?
A: Aside from the aforementioned language experience, I have learned a vast amount about the IT/tech industry and the various parts that it entails. I feel very confident that these skills will serve me well in any situation as the age of technology continues to evolve.

--

Q: What are 3 words to describe PSPINC?
A: Adaptive, Responsive, Personalized

--

Q: Before working at PSPINC, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?
A: For good or ill, I used to hold a customer service role at a department store which allowed me to come across just about every type of person. I met many people during my time there and had both positive and negative experiences, which made it interesting in its own way.

--

Q: What has been your favorite project at PSPINC?
A: We designed a complete parking reservation system from scratch for the state of Hawaii, and even ported it to another park on a different island. This stood out for me as the most successful project we have done that I was involved in from the start, and that went the most smoothly.

--

Q: What is your proudest moment at PSPINC?
A: Completing my first team project from start to finish – many of the customers and projects that I worked with initially were inherited part-way through. But having a new customer and brand-new project to work on and be involved in at each step to see it through to completion was a great feeling.

--

Q: What advice do you have for prospective candidates?
A: Try and learn something new every day, whether about your own job or even someone else’s. Growing your knowledge to be as expansive as possible will help you do your own work and understand the work that others do.

--

Q: What are some of your hobbies?
A: Gaming, Online media consumption, playing saxophone, studying new languages

--

Q: What is your favorite food?
A: Curry – more specifically authentic Japanese curry. The spicier the better!

--

Q: What is your favorite movie?
A: The Lord of the Rings trilogy, followed closely by the prequel Hobbit trilogy.

--

Q: Where would you like to travel to?
A: Either Japan (again, to Tokyo region) or New Zealand (home of LOTR!)

--

We hope you enjoyed getting to know Brandon a bit! If you are looking for assistance with your next web project, give Brandon a call at 1-800-232-3989. He has the experience and expertise to help make your digital dream a reality.

Do you like what you heard about PSPINC? Check our open positions, we are always looking for talented individuals looking to fast track their career in technology!

PSPINC What's New Newsletter Vol. 84 "The Power of Legacy Media"

thread
PSPINC What's New Newslette...
Vol. 84

Many people think - "what you see on TV is right", "what you read in the newspaper is right", "what you hear on the radio is true", "what you hear on the Internet is often false." However, when the news comes from newspapers and TV programs by the People's Republic of China (Chinese Communist Party) or the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), would you think they are correct?

Why is that? I think it is because everyone knows that the information published by the Chinese Communist Party and North Korea is propaganda. Why do you know that this information is propaganda? It's because the media sources that we trust say so. So where is the guarantee that the information you are hearing from our media is not propaganda?

The expression, "what you hear on the Internet is often false" is a correct statement. However, I don't think that everything is a lie or made up. The Internet is a place where anyone can say anything and let the listener decide what they believe. Nowadays, many Internet service providers are censoring and eliminating content, it's not just social networking and video distribution. Emails are also being censored and deleted. We don't think this is a good thing.

Pacific Software Publishing, Inc.'s email service quarantines suspicious emails, but always provides them in a recoverable environment. We believe that freedom of expression includes the freedom to listen and read, as well as the freedom to distribute.

Important Google Analytics data you can use to optimize your website

thread
Important Google Analytics data...
We’ve all heard the quote “knowledge is power”. This has never range more true than it does these days. Analytical data is being monitored for all facets of day-to-day life, including the Internet. As a website owner, you can take advantage of this data as well with the power of Google Analytics.

Below you will find a few useful areas of the Google Analytics admin panel that can help you optimize your website’s performance in the eyes of your visitors.

Audience > Overview

From here you can get some useful general metrics on traffic to your website. You can check Users, New Users, Sessions, Number of Sessions per User, Pageviews, and Pages / Session. Along with that, you can see new vs returning visitors to gauge how effective your website is at getting people to come back. This paired with a useful line graph representing Users over the evaluation period makes this both visual and data-rich.

Audience > Technology > Browser & OS

Historically browsers haven’t always played nice with one another. What I mean by that is, just because your website looks beautiful on Google Chrome does NOT mean it will look that same way on say, Internet Explorer. Using this data will allow you to determine what browsers are most used by your audience. You can then work with your development team to ensure the experience is perfect across specific devices. At PSPINC we always test our web development projects on all modern and supported web browsers.

Audience > Mobile > Overview

From this view, you can gauge how many of your users are visiting via desktop, mobile, and tablet. This will help you determine how your website visitors view your website to ensure it is optimized for those experiences. If you need help ensuring you are delivering a seamless experience regardless of the device your visitors use, let us know - we can help.

Acquisition > Overview

So far we have talked about getting data out of Users once they visit your website. This page helps you determine where your traffic is coming from. Which are extremely useful metrics when it comes time for you to determine a marketing plan. If you see a lot of traffic from Social, well it may be time to investigate running a Facebook ad campaign. Getting a lot of organic search traffic? Amp it up by running some Google Ads! With this page, you get higher-level details on whether your traffic is Direct, Referral (linked from another website), Organic Search, or Social sources.

Acquisition > All Traffic > Source/Medium

This report will further break down the sources and by default arrange them in the order of most Users provided. Here you will see a report on direct traffic, organic search, and each referral source. And for each of those, you will know the number of Users, New Users, Sessions, Bounce Rate, etc. Knowing how users find your site and the exact numbers behind that is powerful information that cannot be overlooked.

Acquisition > Social > Overview

This page will break down your social (media) value. If you are posting to multiple social media platforms consistently, this information can provide information on which of those are most helpful in getting you referral traffic. Each website audience is unique, and just because a specific platform is popular globally, doesn’t mean it is helping your website bring in new business. With information like this, you can determine which are worth investing more time in, and which you could be doing more to increase your website audience.

We have just scratched the surface. Google Analytics is a data-rich platform. Whether or not you use this data daily or just occasionally, you should be tracking it. If you don’t have Google Analytics installed on your website and need some help, please let us know. We can help get you up and running in no time.

PSPINC What's New Newsletter Vol. 83 "Freedom of Speech"

thread
PSPINC What's New Newslette...
Vol. 83

I used to think that freedom of speech was guaranteed in the United States. However, lately, we have been seeing a lot of restrictions (self-imposed or government-mandated) on speech and factual reporting by the media and so-called "Big Tech" companies. We believe that this is unacceptable for any reason. It is up to people to decide who they support politically, and it is not permissible to force them to think it is right or wrong.

We believe that people can formulate their own ideas when they have a lot of information. We can't force people to manage their thoughts. If this coercion continues, societies like North Korea and China will be born. Freedom of speech is not guaranteed in these countries. Defiant speech against the country or its leaders is subject to detention or even execution. The scary fact is that this now appears to be starting to happen in the United States.

We believe that freedom of speech is the foundation of liberty and a fundamental line of democracy that can never be bent. If the media and "Big Tech" continue to act as a block to these principles, we believe we have an obligation to develop another medium for free speech. This is the DENREI system that we are currently developing at Pacific Software Publishing, Inc.

DENREI.COM

DENREI is an email-based social communication platform, where all communication is between the sender and the recipient(s). The system does not censor any of the emails being sent. The mailer version is currently available, but Pacific Software Publishing, Inc. is preparing to offer it as an App. If you are interested in joining the community, you can register on the website for free.

Using stock photos on your website

thread
Using stock photos on your w...
When it comes to your website, it is really important that not only is it informational, but that it is visually appealing enough to hold your user’s attention.

A quick way to have a user lose trust not only in your website, but potentially your business, would be to load a bunch of poor quality, outdated, and unprofessional-looking imagery throughout your website. Remember, your website is an extension of your brand.

For users that don’t have the library of photos or budget to hire a photographer, stock photographs are an option.

What are stock photos?

Simply put, stock photos are professionally shot photos that are licensed for use.

Tips for using stock photos

1. Make sure you have read the usage license before using an image
Stock photos have specific licenses in terms of how you can use them. This could include how it is used (web or print), how many times you are allowed to use it, or whether the image requires attribution (essentially a written acknowledgment of where you got the photo form).

Important: NEVER should you simply search Google images and use those on your website. You open yourself up to legal liability if you are using images that you do not own the license for.

2. There is such thing as too many stock photos
Yes, stock photos certainly look slick and can provide a professional look to your website. However, be careful - adding too many stock photos will have your site losing that “personal touch.” Something that many small businesses actively pursue to stand out from the competition.

Remember, you want photos on your website that help represent what your business is all about. When you use stock photos you run the risk of seeing that same photo on somebody else’s website.

3. Sources for stock photos (paid and free)
There are a TON of stock photo websites out there - both free and paid. With paid stock photos you often buy credits and can spend them on photos. Again, always read the usage license before you purchase a photo. Some sites will limit how you use the images you purchase the license for. The benefit of a paid stock photo is you are going to have more variety and you are far less likely to see the same photo creep up on the competition’s website.

On the flip side, free stock photo websites have their own usage license requirements that it is important to pay attention to. Some require attribution on your source material when using images, others do not.

Below are a few stock photo sites both paid and free for your reference.

NewsMAIL Service Upgrades

thread
NewsMAIL Service Upgrades
Recently we have been working to improve our NewsMAIL services - a business marketing tool to send newsletters to your customers.

We are happy to announce that we have made an major upgrade to our broadcasting server infrastructure, and now have multiple servers to handle high-load broadcast periods.

What this means is that even if many people are sending out a broadcast at the same time, there will be more resources to ensure all mails are sent out quickly and do not get stuck in a queue. Your broadcasts will be completed much faster even for large mailing lists.

We have also made some additional small improvements to the structure of the emails being sent out, so they are much less likely to be flagged as spam by major email clients such as Gmail and Yahoo. We are further working on a few more improvements on this front and are hoping to have these updates available soon.

We hope that these updates will improve your experience with the system.

If you haven't tried out NewsMAIL yet, give us a call at 425-957-0808 or visit our website today to learn more and sign up for a free trial!
