- Ken Uchikura Newsletter Vol 127 The Three Levels of the Internet
I know it is said that there are three levels to the internet. By understanding these, I hope you will know the importance of protecting your personal information.
The first level includes the websites that you can find by searching on commonly available search engines. These sites are called the surface web, meaning the top level of the internet. There are some illegal sites on this level, but if you use common sense and don't click on strange links or enter personal information into untrustworthy websites, you can avoid many of the dangers.
The next level is the web that can only be accessed by certain people, also known as the deep web. To access this part of the internet, you need to register and authenticate as a user. Corporate and membership systems are typical examples of this.
Then there is the last layer called the dark web. This layer cannot be accessed by ordinary search engines or browsers. To access it, you need a browser designed for the dark web. The characteristic of a browser used here is that the user is anonymous and the IP address cannot be traced. Based on this, the dark web is also known as the shadow internet. It is used for trading confidential data, revealing information, and illegal content. TOR Browser is the name of a browser that can be used to access the dark web.

This is a special browser that does not disclose user information. It allows users from countries that control information to access the Internet without disclosing their information. For example, the New York Times has a dark website for people in countries where information is censored.
On the negative side, the dark web is also a place where leaked personal data is often bought and sold. It is also where electronic money (cryptocurrency) such as Bitcoin is used for payment. One last thing, if you buy something on the dark web through the TOR browser, your credit card company may not be able to guarantee the purchase.
I will download the TOR browser when I have time and report back.
