What is Digital Transformation?
We hear the term "digital transformation" a lot these days, but we don't know what to do with it. Many IT companies use digital transformation as a key phrase for selling systems, including hardware. The substance of digital transformation has become nothing more than sales buzzwords.
Buzzwords are nonsensical (but cool) itty-bitty words taken from (or imitating) technical jargon, often abused by amateurs to make them appear to be experts in their field. It can also be a word or phrase that has become very popular within a particular time or field. A technical term that is authoritative, jargon, or impressive.
As you can see from the above explanation, it is my opinion that digital transformation is unfortunately just buzzwords. As I have written before in my blog, the closest term to digital transformation is office automation (OA). In the 1980s and 1990s, there was a movement to computerize offices which we called OA.
OA had many advantages: it made companies look cool, cutting-edge, made it easier to attract people, etc. Though in reality, OA was just a sales term for PCs, and at the same time, it sold software. It took more than a decade for everyone to own a computer!
Before you think about what you need to do with digital transformation, think about what inefficiencies you have in your company right now, and whether you can solve them with computers and software. That's what digital transformation is all about in OA.
