December 2022 Special PSPINC's Internet Business Beginnings: Part 3

In my previous newsletter, I talked about how we started our hosting service in 1996 by building a T1 line and DNS, Web, and Mail servers. In 1997, we offered our services at the following prices:

• Web Site Hosting(10 MB max) .... $75.00 / Month
- additional 10MB to 100MB .... $7.50 / per 1MB / Month
- additional 100MB or More ... $4.00 /per 1MB / Month
• Web Server Hosting (Space Restricted by Server Hardware Only) .... Call

If you wish to have your own domain name, we can help you register with InterNIC or transfer an existing domain to our server. Remember, we allocate only 16 domains (IPs) per server to avoid traffic related slow downs.

• Domain Name Search .... Always Free
• Domain Name Registration and Server IP Setup .... $499.00
• Domain Name Transfer and Server IP Setup .... $399.00

Options to Customize Your Web Page
• HTML Based Online Order Receiving .... Add $50.00 / Month
• SSL Secure Online Transaction Support .... Add $50.00 / Month
• BBS Area (so people can post messages) .... Add $20.00 / Month
• Chat Area (for online discussions) .... Add $20.00 / Month

Email (Your Own Email Account)
• Email Account Setup Charge .... $10.00 / Account
• Monthly Account Use Fee .... $5.00 / Month

Bilingual Web Page Development
• Web page development (in English or Japanese) .... $45.00 / Hour
• Web page translation (both E-J and J-E) .... $0.25 - 0.45 / word

Web Page Marketing
• English Search Engine postings.... $49.00
• Japanese Search Engine postings.... $99.00
• Linking service (if applicable) .... $45.00/hr

Web Page Development Resources
• Check It Out .... FREE

Compared to now, the price might surprise you. But back then, if you wanted to do your own hosting, you needed to invest tens of thousands of dollars for lines and servers. Remember, the price of a T1 line used to be $6,000/month. So, while it may seem expensive here, the price was unbeatable to run a business with a web presence at the time.

Many of our customers had their Web sites under the MOSHIx2.net subdomain. But, "Mitsui & Co. (USA), Inc.", "Tully's Coffee", "Computer News", "Takarajimasha", "Sumitomo Electric", "Discount Golf Superstore" used PSPINC's hosting under their own domains. Of course, we either created the homepages for them or helped them do so.

At the time, web & email hosting services were very rare, and we also had the advantage of speaking both English and Japanese. So, many companies contacted us to ask about our services and got offers. This was in 1997. Of course, at this point, we were still battling unstable web and mail servers. So, we'd go to the office late at night to reboot the servers regularly. We didn't have a 24-hour operation, but, in the end, it was the manager or one of the staff members and I who stayed up all night every day. Of course, it also wasn't uncommon to get called in at three o'clock in the morning.

From there, we started developing our own server software and server monitoring tools to ensure a stable operation. And this continues to this day, a quarter of a century later. Anyway, I hope you can understand that PSPINC's hosting business, which started when there were no tools like today, wasn't operated by external software. Instead, it proceeded along its own unique path. We hope you enjoyed these three newsletters of PSPINC's internet business beginnings. PSPINC will continue to strive, not only as a hosting company, but also as a technology development company that supports the hosting business. Many of the technologies we developed here can also be used to make your site and business processes run more efficiently. If you are considering DX, please let us know. And we would be very happy if you continued supporting our company.

Gasoline Prices are Coming Down

thread
Gasoline Prices are Coming D... Gasoline Prices are Coming D... Gasoline Prices are Coming D...
I filled my car up today at NorthBend Shell Station for under $4.50. That sounds cheaper than used to be but still expensive. I heard that COSTCO is selling its regular gas for under $3.70.

It is good to see gas price coming down. How much was the gas price when you refuel your car?

December 2022 Special PSPINC's Internet Business Beginnings: Part 2

In my previous newsletter, I talked about my encounter with SprintLink in 1996, which taught me how the internet works, how to pay for it, and how I got a T1 line from SprintLink. At the time, it was important for me to understand who pays for the internet, who pays backbone providers, like SprintLink, what internet service providers buy, and what they sell. Once you understand what they’re selling, then you can think about your own business.

When I pulled the T1 into my office, I could connect my computer and get unlimited access to the internet. This way, there wouldn’t be any additional cost no matter how much time I spend online or which website I accessed. Moreover, the T1 high-speed connection was very comfortable. That being said, there weren’t any video streaming services at the time, as it was nine years before YouTube came out in 2005. In 1996, there were reportedly only 100,000 web pages in total. I’ve probably viewed most of the web pages that existed at the time.

After I had a comfortable environment to access the internet, I wanted to have my own website. But I didn’t know how to get one. So, I used the advice I got from the people at SprintLink to start preparing for my own web site. I wondered if I needed a “telecommunications carrier” or some other certification to host a website, but it turns out I didn’t need one at all. All I needed was my own IP address, so I procured a Class B IP address (65534 (216-2)), which is now very valuable.

With this IP address, we registered MOSHIx2.net and PSPINC.com in 1996. So, PSPINC.com is a pretty old domain. Then, we set up the servers necessary to publish our homepage: a DNS server (the same MOSIx2.net server we still use today), a web server (a Windows NT Server because we didn’t know about UNIX at the time), and a mail server (though I don’t remember which one we used). In other words, it was quite an investment.

Because of the technical difficulties and how much work this investment took, most companies couldn’t get a website yet. So, we came up with the idea of domain management, a service that manages web and email on behalf of our clients. Now, it’s our hosting business. But again, this was in 1996. So, this means PSPINC’s hosting business started 26 years ago. However, the hosting environment wasn’t nearly as organized as it is today. We had to do everything from page set up to email set up manually, and the servers went down every few hours.

In my next newsletter, I’ll talk more about what the business model looked like during that time. I hope you look forward to it.

Mile-a-Day Walk

thread
Mile-a-Day Walk
Since I have recovered from the surgery I have been trying to walk-a-mile everyday. When I visit Japan, walking a mile is not a problem at all. I usually finish walking a mile by noon everyday in Japan. But here in the US, it is little more challenging. I usually take my to everywhere I go.

Yesterday, by evening, I still haven not walk a mile yet. So, I drive to a mall near my house and parked at far end of the mall (Factoria Mall) and walk around the mall. It gets harder when it is raining.
