New Mail Server

We have been working on developing new mail server software for over a year and it is finally in the alpha testing stage. I am one of the participants in this new mail server test. My email account (ken.uchikura@pspinc.com) is running on the new server.

We still have some minor issues but they are being worked on as we speak. More and more of our staff are being switched to the new server system. Our current mail server is called ST Mail Version 4 and is running on Windows NT servers. The new mail server currently has no name but it’s been called V5 internally. This mail server is running on Linux instead of Windows, it is faster and easier to maintain.

V5 will be introduced gradually to our customers. Our goal is to replace ST Mail V4 by the end of this year. In addition to replacing our hosting platform, V5 will grow into a locally hosted server. This will allow companies to host their own server within their facility without any size or account limitations.

We can provide a backup mail server if something goes wrong with the local server too. If you are interested in adopting or selling V5, please let me know. We will continue to report the progress of our new mail server software.

Sending Large File(s) Easily and Securely

You have files that you need to send to someone but your email can only handle a few megabytes of attachments. How do you handle this situation?

Back in 2004, we created Windows software to do just that. It was called PS..MegaMail and we sold it for $1,245.00. Yes, it was packaged software, using our file server and the software together we created a system that allowed people to send multi-megabyte files.

In 2008, we created a web-based application to replace the Windows program to make it what is now called SaaS (Software as a Service). People can now use any web browser to upload and send files to anyone on a PC with Internet access.

Since then we have been upgrading the system’s performance and security. The latest version of the service was released mid-May 2020. The message is still the same, “If you need to send large amounts of files, MegaMail provides you with one of the easiest and most secure options available”.

We used to talk about making your website mobile compatible for a long time.. We then started to talk about making your website responsive. After talking about this for a long time, we have stopped making this a point of discussion. However, looking at the real world, there are many company websites that are not responsive.

So let’s review what a responsive website is:

“Responsive web design is an approach to web design that makes web pages render well on a variety of devices, windows or screen sizes.”

What does this mean? It means, once you create (or re-create) your website using responsive web design technology, your website will work on PC, tablet and smartphone - all of which feature different screen sizes.

Unfortunately, making your website responsive is a complete rewrite of your website. Some of the newest tools from our company, such as WebdeXpress, enables you to create a responsive website. If you need help, we can develop your website using WebdeXpress or even WordPress.

Whether you use us or do it yourself, I hope you will pay attention to your website and make it responsive. During the COVID-19 pandemic with the ‘Stay-Home’ order in place, people will be spending more time on the web conducting business. You should make sure you update your website. NewsMAIL is an email broadcasting system that we created back in 1997. The following blurb is what we have written about this software.

Broadcast Email Made Easy With NewsMAIL

NewsMAIL allows you to add, delete and create email groups from your browser. At the same time, you can compose email messages and broadcast them without having to use your email program. This benefit allows you to manage email broadcasting from any Internet access location. How does broadcasting newsletters to clients while sitting in an Internet cafe in Paris sound?

Create separate NewsMAIL groups based on customer's needs and send tailored messages.

With NewsMAIL, you compose your email content using a browser. When you've finished your newsletter, press release, product announcement or promotion - select the appropriate database file and press "SEND". NewsMAIL takes care of the rest. NewsMAIL is not a mail server program. NewsMAIL works with your existing mail server (SMTP/POP3) to send the email. You do not have to replace your existing mail server.

One unique feature of NewsMAIL is the way it sends emails. Instead of sending out all of the emails at once, NewsMAIL composes one email at a time, addresses each email with the address found within the database and then sends it. It is a slower process. However, your email address database is completely secure. Another benefit is that you can set the return address on each broadcast to any location you want. This allows you to manage client responses and returned mail messages.

NewsMAIL is very easy to install. If you've installed WindowsNT server and IIS before, it shouldn't take more than a 1/2 hour. Once installed, address maintenance and mail composition are done through a web browser. The benefit is that once you've installed NewsMAIL, you never have to call your Sysop for support.

If you have 50 clients, 5,000 clients or even 100,000 clients, you need a simple and secure way to broadcast email. Why not select the program that gives you maximum security and a simple-to-use interface?

There are many businesses that, despite the ‘stay home’ order, need to operate. Those include hospital, medical professionals, police, fire departments, waste collection, government, utilities, janitorial services, drugstores, delivery services, gas stations, auto repair, warehousing, transportation, supermarkets, plumbing, electricians, telephone, cellular services, internet and other businesses that deal with the well-being of humankind.

When you think about the list of essential businesses, there are only few that are not a part of this list. Which includes those that deal with entertainment, food/beverages and retail stores. However, because of the ‘stay home’ order, people that are working for essential businesses are staying home. This is causing a decline in spending.

People are now getting used to not having contact with other people. It will take a long time before individuals are comfortable being around other people, even after the ‘stay home’ order is lifted. Whether we like it or not, people are spending even more time communicating through the Internet. Companies, whether they are essential or not, need to be able to communicate better with people using the Internet.

Here is a checklist:

(1) Make sure your website is up-to-date.
(2) You should have a strong social media presence (Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.).
(3) Your contact information is up-to-date and you have established a method to maintain regular communication.

There are many more things you can do but these are things you should be doing at the very least before we even try to get back to where things were. Whether you are an essential business or not, we are all affected by the Coronavirus. We need to do what we need to do to make ourselves ready for the ‘new normal’.
