Challenge!

thread
Challenge!
On the way up the (many!) steps to Henro temple number 71, there is a small restaurant. We stopped there for lunch. Kagawa Prefecture is famous for `udon` style noodles, so we ordered udon. It was okay, but nothing special. I was a little disappointed.

The restaurant is in the middle of a forest. While we were eating, a forest animal came into the restaurant. What do you think it was? Challenge!

I`ll tell you the answer in 2 weeks.

The answer is in comments!

No, not many rabbits in Japanese forests, mum, though they live on some islands (free from predators?).

Nice guess, but no, it wasn`t a fox.

Does `fox Udon` mean it contains fox meat? Sounds interesting... but I don`t think my udon contained fox meat.

The answer is: A bird! To be exact, a Varied Tit (ヤマガラ Yamagara). There were 2 or 3 of them, & they flew in & out of the restaurant every 1 or 2 minutes to get seeds (たね) in a tin.
Thanks to friend & wildlife photographer Mike Romano for the name of the bird, which I didn`t know. This is his website: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jcowboy/
Please look - his photos of Japanese birds are amazing.
