This year I made colorful labels for my homemade black raspberry jam. I got my daughter to design & color the background, and I had my sons do the writing. I scanned the original label, then printed out multiple copies, in different sizes.
By the way, our school is having an Instagram English recipe contest. Teacher James will cook the winning recipe, so if you want to get him to cook your dish, please enter! I submitted my jam recipe. Details here:

There were lots of ripe (熟している) berries on my blackberry bush, so my daughter and I made jam. It`s pretty easy & fun:
1. Pick heaps of berries
2. Loads of bugs, ants, etc? No problem - just wash them off
3. Blend berries in a blender
4. Blackberries have tons of small seeds - Use a strainer to remove them
5. Put the berry juice and stacks of sugar in a saucepan
6. Boil it for ages (= a long time) while stirring*
7. Put it in clean jars. Finished!
*Actually, this part wasn`t fun; it was pretty boring.
Vocabulary:
- There are many slang (俗語) ways to say 'lots of ___' (たくさん), e.g. heaps/loads/tons/stacks/piles of ___. These are not usually used in written English, apart from (別として) maybe advertising.
I found a video on Youtube about making acorn ( どんぐり) coffee. There are lots of acorns at my local shrine (神社) so I gathered some & tried it. This is the recipe I used:
1. First, take off the shells (殻)
2. Next, chop or grind the acorns
3. Then boil them in water
4. After that, throw away (捨てる) the brown water, which contains tannins.
5. Repeat #4 a few times, until the water is clear
6. Next, roast the acorns until they`re dark brown
7. Finally, add boiling water, wait a few minutes, and drink!
How was it? A little bitter, but okay. I`d like to make it again, but it`s kind of a hassle (面倒くさい).
Vocabulary:
- Next = Then = After that* (Be careful: not "After then")
Oven cooking is often troublesome & time-consuming, but scones are quick & easy to make, & don`t need many ingredients. They taste good with jam & butter or cream, along with a nice hot cup of tea - yum.

- 10g (4 teaspoons) Baking Powder
- 30g Butter
- 180ml (3/4 cup) Milk
Method:
- Mix flour & baking powder
- rub butter into flour with your fingers
- Add milk, mix
- cut or roll into pieces/balls
- cook in oven at 220deg. for 15-20mins.
Good luck!
This is an easy recipe for Anzac biscuits. If you want a more difficult one, just ask your wife or mother to give you advice while you cook.
Ingredients:
125g butter
150g plain flour
90g oatmeal
65g desiccated/shredded coconut
150g sugar
2 tablespoons golden syrup (or honey is okay)
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1. Melt butter with golden syrup, then mix all ingredients together
3. Make balls, about 5cm diameter
4. Put on tray, put in oven
5. Cook at 150 degrees for 15 - 20 minutes
Easy!
On the weekend I made jam with black raspberries from my bush in the garden.
Following my student Makie`s advice, I used the microwave instead of a pot/pan & burner [conro]. Here is the recipe if you`re interested (& if you`re not fussy about measurements & details!):
Raspberry Jam Recipe:
1. Put raspberries, some lemon juice, & about a cup of sugar in a microwave-safe bowl
2. Cook in the microwave oven for about 10 minutes
3. Mix/mash, taste, add more sugar if necessary
4. Keep cooking & mixing till it seems ready
5. Put in bottles
6. Eat on buttered toast - yum!
Easy!
Actually, I think I should have cooked mine a bit longer, but it tastes good. Also, I left the seeds in my jam, because they`re small & not too hard, but if you`re a fussy, over-sensitive person (i.e. not from Australia), maybe you should strain the jam when you make it, to take out the seeds.
This was my favourite dessert when I was a kid. Nowadays I don`t often cook, but I make this sometimes. It`s pretty easy.
Here is the recipe:
220g sugar
90g butter (soft)
2 lemons: juice + grated skin
3 eggs: separated into yolks (tamago no kimi) & whites (shiromi)
125g self-raising flour
600ml milk
- Preheat oven to 180deg.
- Beat (using electric mixer) sugar, butter & grated lemon skin
- Add egg yolks & beat
- Add flour & milk alternately (koutai ni?) & beat
- Add lemon juice & mix a little
- In ANOTHER bowl, beat egg whites until stiff (katai?)
- Add egg whites to first bowl & mix in softly (yasashiku)
- Put into buttered cooking dish(es) & cook for 30-35 minutes
Notice in the picture that it has a lot of sauce - that`s normal; it`s not a cake.
As I said, it`s pretty easy (if your oven doesn`t hate you & you can find where your mother-in-law has hidden all the utensils (kitchin-yougu) again...) and you don`t need any special ingredients (zairyou), so you should try making it!
