Listening to Youtube... on my Stereo!

thread
Listening to Youtube... on my S...
I`ve been cleaning & fixing this old stereo system. I can play tapes on the tapedeck, and records on the turntable, and now, after buying some cables from a thrift store(リサイクルショップ), I can connect it to my computer & play music from Youtube through it - nice! The stereo speakers are way (=much) better than my computer ones.

Unfortunately, the tuner on the stereo is still not working, so I can`t listen to music on the radio yet. I will try to fix that next.

Grammar:
- play games/listen to music/edit photos ON my computer/smartphone
- watch movies ON my computer/my smartphone/DVD/Youtube/Netflix
- chat with friends ON Facebook, Line, WhatsApp

Pen-on-wing X-Wing

thread
Pen-on-wing X-Wing
I found this plastic model in a wardrobe at my parents` house in Australia. It belonged to my younger brother when he was a kid. He must have put it there & forgotten about it. I decided to bring it to Japan & put it together with my kids. A couple of the guns for the wings were missing or broken, so I put parts of old Teragoya pens there instead. Finally, I put the finished model in my kids` room, hanging from the ceiling. Looks good!

Grammar
Don`t forget to use an object (目的語) with 'put':
“Where did you put the model?” “I put IT in my room.” "Why did you put IT there?" etc. ["Where did you put?": WRONG "I put in my room": WRONG]

Wreath Time

thread
Wreath Time
I found our wreath & replaced the old leaves with new green ones. Last time we used red flowers to add colour. This time we used fishing floats. Yes, I have a lot of them ( https://en.bloguru.com/otto/361390/a-few-new-floats )! This might be the last time we use this wreath - after 4 years, it`s starting to get a bit shabby (ぼろぼろ). Next time we might make a new one. We`ll see.

Vocabulary
- last time = 前回 this time = 今回 next time = 今度, 次の回
- the last time = 最後 / 前回

Matching Jeep & Field Gun

thread
Matching Jeep & Field Gun
When I was a kid, my brothers & I had small toy field guns (野砲) which fired matches*. Nowadays that kind of toy isn`t popular & is hard to find, so I decided to make my own. After making it, I decided to make a matching** jeep.

To fire this toy field gun, you put a match in the barrel (銃身), pull the 'trigger' at the back (which is attached to a spring) then release it.

The toy soldiers are WW2 Australian soldiers. You can tell (見分ける) by their large hats.

Vocabulary
* match (名詞) = マッチ, 燐寸
** match (動詞) = 対応

A Few New Floats

thread
A Few New Floats
When I went to Fukui last week, I was pleased to find some more fishing floats on the beach. I added a few* of the nicer ones to my display case collection. It looks better now, right?

Nowadays I have few** chances to do serious beachcombing, so I wondered when I would be able to complete my display case collection. I`m glad I`ve completed it.

Teragoya Marché

thread
Teragoya Marché
I made a set of shelves for our school lobby. We will use it to display handicrafts, etc. for sale. If you enjoy making things such as jewelry, accessories, toys, stationery, or something like that, please let us know - we can arrange to display them here.

Vocabulary:
- 'marché' is actually not English - it`s French, for 'market'.

Nice Legs!

thread
Nice Legs!
My wife bought a 'Roomba' automatic vacuum cleaner. Unfortunately, it couldn`t get under the sofa, which was too low. So I took out the original legs (red circle) & made new, slightly longer legs (green circle).

When I put them in, I noticed that a couple are not perfectly straight, but never mind - you can`t really tell (= notice). Anyway, now the Roomba can clean under the sofa, so my wife`s happy. And I`m happy because I saved money by using wood & black spray paint that I already had, so I only had to buy bolts, which were about ¥50 each.

Vocabulary:
- put in = 入れる
- take out = 取り出す (*not 'put out')

End Table

thread
End Table
I made this end table, using some of the wood I gathered at Biwa Lake a couple of weeks ago. It`s just wide enough to put our printer on, but narrow enough to fit in the gap between the sofa & a large cabinet in our living room. Also, it`s just the right height for a rubbish bin (ゴミ箱) to go underneath, & the drawer is just the right size for some A4 paper & spare ink cartridges. Finally, my wife judged that it looks nice enough to keep in the living room.

Grammar:
- ...just the right + 名詞 (e.g. size/length/height/amount/etc.) = 丁度いい
- ...just 形容詞* + enough (*e.g. wide/big/long/etc.) = 辛うじて

Biwa Lake Driftwood

thread
Biwa Lake Driftwood
Have you been to Hikone Castle in Shiga Prefecture before*? I went there with my family yesterday. It`s very near Lake Biwa, so before** coming home, we went to a lakeside park to play & collect driftwood (漂流木), pine cones, & other junk. I`ll use the wood to make picture frames or display cases or something.

Now I`m at work. I gave the pine cones to my workmate Megumi just before***. She`ll use them for her own craft hobby. I hope she displays it in our lobby!

Vocabulary:
- *before = ever
- **before = 前
- ***before = 先ほど
