Whoa! What`s an imported high-performance speed-machine like this doing in a place like Ichinomiya?
And no, Parren, I`m not talking about you (Parren is my workmate at Ichinomiya Teragoya).
This is a Lamborghini Gallardo (2006?)
To tell the truth, I haven`t really been into this kind of car since I was about 16 years old, but I was still impressed when I noticed this one at a car-dealer called Gulliver, on Route 22, on my way to work.
So many years after first pleasing audiences, yet this adorable little crowd-pleaser continues to turn heads for all the right reasons. What`s not to love?
Yeh. I`m a pretty popular guy.
Minis are pretty popular too - I see them occasionally around Ichinomiya. In fact, one of our students has one , but not the one in this photo, which I noticed near my home. I especially like the chrome wing-mirrors & wipers (with an unusual connecting rod).
I`m not sure of the year or details of the mini in the picture - so many different versions have been made since the first one in 1959. If you know, please tell me.
Anyway, nice car!
Ah... a once sought-after symbol of good taste & refinement, now an outdated curiosity, a stark reminder of the rapid & relentless passage of time...
But let`s not talk about me. Look at this old car I found near my school!
It`s a Daihatsu Compagno, from 1972 (I think). It`s in pretty good shape, isn`t it? Well done, owner!
What a shame for a piece of cool & classic beauty to be dragged to a foreign country, only to suffer from the damaging effects of neglect, when a little love & attention could return it to its former glory...
But enough about me.
This is (I think) a 1959 Cadillac Eldorado, which I pass on my ride to work in Ichinomiya. The tyres are always pumped up, & occasionally it is parked in the opposite direction, so I guess it still runs, despite all the rust (sabi).
It`s a surprise to see such a car in the suburbs of Japan!
I hope the owner restores it properly one day.
I`m not really interested in Formula One racing, but at the moment an Australian, Mark Webber, is leading the standings. Also, he came second at Suzuka circuit last Sunday. Well done!
Australia hasn`t had a successful F1 driver for a while - nowadays the winners are usually Europeans or Brazilians (just like World Cup football!)
To celebrate, I made this collage.
Are you interested in F1? Do you have a favourite car or driver?
Do you have a collection of small model F1 cars that you keep in a special display case that your wife says you should get rid of because you are too old for such a silly hobby?
Our car is getting pretty old, so it`s time to buy a new one. Pictured above are our options:
- New Honda Freed 8-seater, or
- Used 1972 Landrover 4WD 12-seater with a tent on top.
That`s right; the Landrover has 4WD, 4 seats MORE than the Freed, AND a tent on the roof.
Yes.
A tent on the roof.
Can you guess which is my choice, and which is my wife`s...?
