Higashiyama Zoo

thread
Higashiyama Zoo
Every year our school takes a trip to the zoo. It`s fun to look at & talk about real animals instead of (代わりに) pictures in books.

At first, this hippo was relaxing in the water, but when the man with the hose came, the hippo opened its mouth. It really seemed to enjoy having its mouth hosed. And, as you can see, the kids enjoyed watching! Maybe because they were thirsty - it`s been hot recently, hasn`t it?

Punctuation:
- it`s = it is / it has
- its = [何か]の...

Miyako Island, Okinawa - Butter...
Besides colorful tropical fish, there were also a lot of beautiful butterflies to see on Miyako Island. While we were driving, I saw heaps of big black swallowtail butterflies (swallow = 燕 tail = 尻尾, so swallowtail butterfly = 揚羽) beside the road. Great! I also saw a big dead snake beside the road. Gross! ( キモい )

Be careful: besides = 其れに, その他 beside = 傍ら, 側

Mihama Monkeys

thread
Mihama Monkeys
On Sunday I went for a drive to Fukui Prefecture. I took a walk on the beach, but of course I didn`t go for a swim - it`s still too cold.

After taking a look around Mihama Beach, I noticed a big group of monkeys in a field, so I took some photos.

Did you know there are no wild (野生) monkeys in Australia?

Vocabulary:
- Sometimes, instead of just `____(動詞)`, we can use `go ___ing` or `take a ____` or `go for a _____` e.g. swim = go swimming = take a swim = go for a swim.
- Note: the meaning might change a little e.g. walk = 歩く, take a walk = 散歩する

Yanagase Dinosaur Display

thread
Yanagase Dinosaur Display
Last weekend there was a free display of large dinosaur models in Yanagase in Gifu. I took my kids to see it. They really enjoyed it, though my younger son was a little scared. There were about 10 dinosaurs. The biggest one was Tyrannosaurus rex. It was pretty scary, especially when it opened its mouth. Some kids cried.

Vocabulary:
- I wasn`t scarED. My son felt scarED. Were you scarED?
- It was scarY. The dinosaurs looked scarY. I saw a scarY poster.

Weasel in my Garden

thread
Weasel in my Garden
Occasionally I see wild (野生) weasels in Japan. Recently I saw one in my garden, so I quickly got my camera & took a video.

I wrote a poem (詩) about it:

Weasel in my Garden

A weasel in my garden! Outside, just there!
I stopped moving. I stopped to stare.
I wanted to know why it came to my garden,
But it ran off as soon as I said, "Pardon..."

庭にイタチがいた!すぐそこに!
私は、動くのを止めた. 私はじっと見るために止めた
なんで、イタチが自分ちの庭に….
でも「すみま…..」と声をかけようとしたら逃げていってしまったよ

Grammar:
- start running = start to run = 走るのを始める
- stop smoking = タバコをすうのを止める stop to smoke = タバコをすうために止める

Nests

thread
Nests
I found these two nests in my garden. I`m happy about the first one, but not so happy to see the second one...

I think the bird`s nest belongs to a brown-eared bulbul (ヒヨドリ). I`m looking forward to seeing the chicks (雛鳥).

Vocabulary:
- In English, to "stir up (掻き回す) a hornet`s nest" means to create trouble or panic, e.g. "The worker really stirred up a hornet`s nest when he accidentally uploaded his private photos to the company website."

Higashiyama Zoo Trip

thread
Higashiyama Zoo Trip
On Sunday, Teragoya took about 80 kids to Higashiyama zoo in Nagoya. I think the kids` favourite animals were the tiger, the elephants, & the penguins. I like penguins, but their enclosure (囲壁 ?) is really smelly.

After looking at animals, we had a tasty lunch, took photos, then went home. The weather was good & everyone had a good time.

Vocabulary:
- "It`s tasty" = It tastes GOOD, but "It`s smelly" = It smells BAD

Poor Poodles

thread
Poor Poodles

There are lots of ways to study a language. Sometimes I read Crayon Shinchan comics - the pictures help me understand, & they`re funny. When I saw these dogs at a highway service area, I was reminded (思い出させた) of a Crayon Shinchan story...

I guess their owner is an attention-seeker (目立ちたがりな人).

Vocabulary:

The word `remind` is very useful:

- If someone asks you to do something, but you`re busy, you can say: "Please remind me later/tomorrow/etc."

- If somebody says something that makes you remember something: "Oh! That reminds me - I got an email from... etc."

- If somebody mentions something that you want to forget: "Don`t drink too much at the halloween party - remember last year?" "Aah... don`t remind me!"
