新春の稽古始め。
本日が初稽古のため、先生の配慮で通常の浴衣ではなく晴れ着を着ての稽古となりました。踊り用の帯も締めていただきました。このまま成人式に行けそうです。
日本舞踊の仕草の端端に見える、なでしこの備えるべき理想人の資質。
師匠の指導からそのことが伺いしれます。
しとやかであり、
かつ、
たおやかであらねばならない。
しとやかさは、常に両膝を合わせながら内股気味に歩くことに。
そしてたおやかさは、扇子で口元を半分だけ隠す仕草に表されるように感じました。
娘は本来野生のような激しさを持って生まれたはずなのに、稽古を通じて真逆にある繊細で清楚な表現方法を学ぶ。
それは日常の生き方自体にもつながるものでしょう。
ここに何か大きな意義があるような気がする。
そんなことを帰りの車中で、二人して話していました。
家に着くと早速娘は夕食にピザを作ってくれました。
昨晩のうちにその生地は用意しておいたものです。
つまり全てが彼女の手作り。
彼女のピアノ演奏をBGMにしていただきました。
The first practice of the new year.
Since today was the first day of practice, the teacher had her wear fancy kimono instead of the usual yukata.
She was also able to wear an obi for dancing. I think She directly go to Japanese Adult ceremony with that.
In the gestures of Japanese dance, you can see the qualities of an ideal person that Nadeshiko should acquire.
You can see these in the master's instruction.
She is graceful.
and
You must be both graceful and dignified.
To be graceful, you must always walk with your knees together and your thighs inward.
And I felt that gentleness was expressed in the gesture of covering only half of the mouth with a fan.
My daughter was naturally born with wild and fierce, but through her training, she learned how to express herself in a delicate and innocent way that is the exact opposite.
It would be something that would lead to her daily life itself.
I feel that there is something of great significance here.
That's what we were talking about in the car on the way home.
When we arrived home, my daughter immediately made pizza for dinner.
She had prepared the dough last night.
In other words, everything was homemade by her.
We had dinner with her playing the piano as background music.

そんな物憂い宵でしたが、娘らが夕食に来てくれました。
しかも、ヴィーガン料理に通じている一流シェフを伴って。

今後1週間以上、このような日の入りは見れなくなります。
厚い雲に閉ざされて太陽位置のヒントすらわからなくなります。

今日はいつもとは異なるところで夕日を観察に出かけました。
近所にある中学校校庭です。
今年最後の日曜の午後、
皆様はどのようにお過ごしでしょうか。
今年は例年とは異なる画期的な年でした。
世界史に大きく刻まれるであろう、パンデミックによる世界同時鎖国化です。
パンデミックの収束はまだおぼつかなく、ここ最近、感染者の急激な広がりが報道されています。
昨日と今日で全ての外国人の入国が、イスラエルでも日本でも一時禁止されました。
また来年早々、混乱を極めた米国大統領選挙の結果が判明しそうです。
カリフォルニアのロックダウンが解除されるかどうかも注視しています。
例年なら、こんなきれいな夕日を見ながら地元の中学生たちはクラブ活動を楽しんでいたことでしょう。野球、サッカー、陸上競技、、、校庭で暗くなるまで時間を忘れて没頭できるだなんて、一生のうちに経験出来る瞬時の特権なはず。
その貴重な青春のひとこまも奪われてしまいました。
我が息子も、楽しみにしているサッカーの試合がいよいよ高校卒業まで全てが取り上げられてしまったのです。
そんな人間界の異変に全く関与せずと言わんばかりに、自然界の営みは続けられています。
神の目から見て私たち人間は自然界より偉大なものです。
パンデミックも、戦争も、また病も、超越したかのように悠久の時を刻みながらびくともしない自然界。
その自然界よりも私たち1人の価値は偉大であると教えています。
年の瀬になると永遠の時に思いが至ります。
広大な自然を前にすると無限の空間に思いを寄せます。
そして、自然と空間と時間の創造者なる方に。
その創造者なる方が人間との関係を築くために遣わされたひとり子なる方に。
"空の鳥を見なさい。
種蒔きもせず、刈り入れもせず、倉に納めることもしません。
それでも、あなたがたの天の父は養っていてくださいます。
あなたがたはその鳥よりも、ずっと価値があるではありませんか。
あなたがたのうちだれが、心配したからといって、
少しでも自分のいのちを延ばすことができるでしょうか。"

Today I went out to observe the sunset at a different place than usual.
It was in the schoolyard of a nearby junior high school.
It's the last Sunday afternoon of the year.
How are you doing?
This year has been a groundbreaking year, different from other years.
This year was a different kind of epoch-making year, one that will go down in world history as a pandemic that shut down the world simultaneously.
The pandemic is still far from over, and there have been reports of the rapid spread of infected people in recent days.
Yesterday and today, all foreigners have been temporarily banned from entering Israel and Japan.
Also, early next year, we are going to find out the results of the confusing US presidential election.
I'm also watching to see if the California lockdown will be lifted.
In past years, the local junior high school students would have enjoyed their club activities while watching such a beautiful sunset. Baseball, soccer, track and field... it must be an instant privilege to be able to lose yourself in the schoolyard until dark.
That precious moment of youth has been taken away from them.
My son's soccer games, which he looks forward to so much, have been taken away from him until he finally graduates from high school.
The workings of the natural world continue on, seemingly unconcerned with such anomalies in the human world.
In the eyes of God, we humans are greater than the natural world.
Pandemics, wars, and diseases have not faltered in the natural world, which has been ticking away for a long time as if it has transcended.
It teaches us that the value of each of us is greater than that of the natural world.
At the end of the year, I am reminded of eternal time.
When I am faced with the vastness of nature, I think of infinite space.
And to the Creator of nature, space, and time.
And also to His only begotten Son, whom He sent to establish a relationship with humanity.
“Look at the birds of the air;
they do not sow or reap or store away in barns,
and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are you not much more valuable than they?
Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”

2日目となった大和撫子へのトレーニング。
今日は先輩撫子を交えての厳しい特訓です。
まずは稽古の初めに師匠への挨拶の仕方から始まります。
お辞儀の仕方はもちろん、正座の姿勢から立ち上がる所作について、さらには足の運び方、歩き方、方向転換の仕方について細かな指導を受けます。
そして浴衣の着付けとそのたたみ方まで、おそらく日本人でも知らないであろうことをみっちり伝授されました。
そして「桜」を日本舞踊でお稽古。
この清楚である上に妖艶な舞は、確かに他の民族舞踊にない日本独特のものです。扇子を持ちながらかすかに首をかしげるその我が娘の踊りに、純粋な日本人になったかに見えました。
先輩と師匠の指導を受けながらも何度も繰り返し稽古に励む我が子。
大和撫子への道は遠く険しくても、その高根の華を目指して精進してほしいです。
This is the second day of training for Yamato Nadeshiko.
Today's training is very strict with the senior caresses.
At the beginning of the training, she learned how to greet her masters.
She was given detailed instructions on how to bow, how to sit in seiza, how to stand up, how to carry their feet, and how to walk and turn.
They also taught her how to put on a yukata and how to fold it, which is something even Japanese people probably don't know.
Then she practiced the Japanese dance "Sakura".
This neat and bewitching dance is certainly unique to Japan and not found in other folk dances. I felt as if she had become a pure Japanese, when seeing her holding a fan and tilting her head faintly.
She practiced over and over again under the guidance of the seniors and the master.
The road to becoming a Yamato Nadeshiko may be far and difficult, but I hope she will continue to devote herself to the goal of achieving that lofty goal.

今日は久方ぶりにサンシャインを浴びることができました。
こうして毎日曇りと雨に閉ざされていると、太陽の光が嬉しくてなりません。
とにかく貴重な太陽光浴びるために外に出ました。
数週間ぶりに見たオレンジに輝く日の入り。
息子にとっても貴重な瞬間で、私とのツーショット撮影のために3秒しか時間を割いてくれませんでした。
めったにない事は続けて起こるものです。
今夕の私の作ったヴィーガンスープとパスタが息子の評定で、魔女クラス(最高ランク)をいただきました。これもはじめてのことでした。
Today was the first time in a long time that I was able to take in some sunshine.
After being shut in by cloudy and rainy days here, I'm so exited about the sunshine.
Anyway, I went outside to get some precious sunshine.
It was the first time in weeks that we saw the orange glow of the setting sun.
It was a precious moment for my son as well, and he only gave me three seconds to take a picture with me.
Rarely do things happen in succession.
This evening, my vegan soup and pasta received a witch's class (the highest grade) in my son's evaluation. This was also the first time for me.
日本では古来から、冬至の日にゆずの湯船に浸かる習慣がありました。
そうすると風邪をひかないとか。
もちろん手洗いを励行したほうが効果的面なはずですが、
子供の頃、ゆずのお風呂に入ったことを思い出しました。
そこで今夜は数十年ぶりにゆずの湯。
バスタブは1人専用なので贅沢な使い方です。
In Japan, there has been a custom since ancient times to soak in a yuzu bathtub on the day of the winter solstice.

今日の散歩の始まりは、小雨がぱらつく程度でした。
家を出るときにこの程度なら大した事は無いと腹を決めて、息子と山道を目指したのです。
その入り口にたどり着く頃から土砂降りとなっていました。
この地方には珍しい本格的な降り方です。
それでも10分ほど歩き続けると、いつものおとなしい川があふれ出し、山道を遮断していました。
やむなくそこでユーターンです。
そして夕食後になると天気予報どおりにその雨が雪に変わりました。
この季節最初の積雪です。
そういえば日本ではこの数日間、全国的な大雪に見舞われたと聞いています。
日本列島の上空の天気がそのまま偏西風のジェット気流に乗って丸一日の旅をしながらここ米国のノースウェストにたどりつくのではないかと以前から感じています。
そのような見解を専門家から聞いたことはありませんが。
私の素人感覚です。
だけどよく当たるんですよ。
寒波が列島を襲ったとなると、翌日にはこちらもその寒波に見舞われます。
逆に猛暑日となったときにはやはりその翌日、こちらも気温が上がるんです。
太平洋を挟んで、日米はお隣の国ですよね。
お天気が結びついていると、人の心まで結びつきそうだ、なんて言うのは穿った言い方すぎるでしょうか。
「一衣帯水」といった詩的表現で、日本海を経た列島と大陸のつながりにロマンを求めるのを否定はしません。
しかし太平洋を挟んだ遠距離が我々を離していたとしても、天候がつながっていると知っただけで連帯感が生まれるような気もします。
Today's walk started with a light drizzle.
When we left the house, I decided that it would be no big deal and headed for the mountain path with my son.
By the time we reached the entrance, it was pouring down heavy.
It was a serious downpour, which is rare in this region.
Still, after about 10 minutes of walking, the usual quiet river overflowed and blocked the mountain path.
We had no choice but to make a u-turn there.
After dinner, the rain turned to snow as predicted.
This was the first snowfall of the season.
By the way, I heard that Japan had been hit by heavy snowfall for the past few days.
I've always felt that the weather over the Japanese archipelago will travel a full day on the jet stream of the westerlies to reach the Northwest here in the United States.
I've never heard such a view from an expert, though.
It's just my amateur sense.
But they are often right.
When a cold wave strikes the archipelago, the next day we are hit by the same cold wave.
On the other hand, when there is a heat wave, the temperature rises the next day here.
Across the Pacific Ocean, Japan and the United States are neighboring countries, right?
Is it too much to say that when the weather is connected, the hearts of people are also connected?
I don't deny the romanticism of the connection between the archipelago and the continent via the Sea of Japan in poetic expressions such as "one garment, one water.
But even if the distance across the Pacific Ocean separates us, just knowing that the weather is connected seems to create a sense of solidarity.

ワシントン州とオレゴン州の多くの都心部の郡せは、レストランの営業がテイクアウトのみ許されています。
日本から最近進出してきたこのラーメン店、なかなか良かったです。
ラーメン党の皆様、ごめんなさい。
私はめったなことでラーメンは食べません。油が多いのと炭水化物過剰なゆえに健康上のバランスを欠いてしまうのです。うまいとばかりにスープを飲めば、消化にかなりの負担がかかり午後眠くもなります。
ただこの店は、ラーメンばかりでなく丼メニューもあります。
ヴィーガンの丼もあるため、娘たちも利用できます。
数ヶ月前はなかったきれいなテラスが完成していました。そこは屋外ですから飲食が許されています。
しかも暖房設備が整っていて落ち着いて食事ができます。
これまでは車内で掻き込むことしかできませんでしたが、今週はじめてテーブルでのランチにありつけて嬉しい気持ち。
In many urban counties in Washington and Oregon, restaurants are allowed to operate only as take-out.
This ramen restaurant, a recent addition from Japan, was quite good.
I'm sorry, ramen people.
I rarely eat ramen, because it's too greasy and too carb-heavy to be healthy and balanced. If you drink the broth too much, it puts a lot of strain on your digestion and makes me sleepy in the afternoon.
However, this restaurant has not only ramen but also rice bowls.
They also have vegan bowls, which my daughters can also use.
They have a beautiful terrace that was not there a few months ago. It's outdoors, so eating and drinking are allowed.
Moreover, it is heated, so we can eat in comfort.
So far, I have only been able to scrape a meal in the car in this week, but for the first time, I was able to have lunch at a table.
Feeling so good.
