Ken Uchikura Newsletter Vol. 142 I can't keep up with the conversation.

thread
Ken Uchikura Newsletter Vol. ...

I can't keep up with the conversation.

When I say, "I'd like to hear more constructive opinions from you because you always give negative answers to everything I say." The other person replied, "I don't think so.”

This is a funny story, but I think that conversation with people is essential in creating a cohesive workplace. It is not uncommon to hear people say that they are good at their work but bad at communicating. However, I believe that communication itself is an important part of the job.

If I may say so myself, I have not always been good at actively participating in other people's conversations. So when I'm talking to a group of people, I tend to concentrate on listening and rarely share my opinions unless asked. In that sense, I think I have a personality that doesn't fit in well in a crowd.

In most conversations, I don't listen very positively and wonder why the other person is talking. I often wonder why they are telling me this, or what the point of the conversation is. Of course, I don't show it on my face, and if I am asked, I avoid talking about it negatively. This is one of the reasons why I'm not very good at getting involved in general conversations. Though that doesn't mean I don't listen to what they have to say.

Of course, when it comes to work, you can't just ignore what is being said. I try my best to understand what the other person is saying, but even so, I'm not good at long conversations. I have a tendency to say, "So?"

On the contrary, Japanese people, in particular, tend to speak with explanations, rather than results. In business conversations, rather than chit-chatting, it is important to communicate the 5W1H (what/who/where/when/why/how).
