You may have heard the term “brand identity” thrown around a lot by creative types. To boil it down, your brand identity is essentially the visible aspects of your company such as corporate colors, design considerations, fonts, and the all-important logo.

Your company logo is one of the most important parts of your brand identity. It is essentially a visual representation of what your company is, does, and represents. So choosing a logo is equal parts exciting and stressful.

When it comes time to define your brand within a logo, or perhaps redesign an outdated/existing logo, there are many important things to consider. The first step, if you don’t have an in-house creative team, is to hire a logo designer that best understands your company and can translate that to an easily identifiable visual.

Here are a few tips to help you navigate the hiring process for a logo designer.

Make sure candidates have a portfolio

I can’t stress this enough, if someone wants to design a logo for you but cannot provide examples of work done in the past and they don’t have a digital portfolio - consider it a red flag. Every designer should be prepared (and excited) to show off some of the design work they have done in the past. You want to know what they are capable of before you enter into an agreement with them.

Have an idea on logo styles you like

There are many types of logos - abstract, mascot, emblem, minimalist, a letter mark, etc. You don’t necessarily need to be an expert on all of the terminology, but you should know what you like and what you don’t. Do some research, and have some examples on hand ready to show your logo designer. They don’t have to be from a related field, they just have to be a style you like and that you feel would well represent your brand.

Be prepared to give thoughtful feedback

Rarely is a logo perfect on the first attempt. Your designer should be able to give you a few samples to choose from. Be sure to study them carefully and document what you like and what you don’t like. Nobody knows your business better than you do, so be sure to help the designer best understand why you feel the way you do.

Upon delivery be sure to receive multiple scalable file types

Congratulations! You have a logo you are stoked, now it is time for final delivery to close out the project. Any reputable designer will be able to provide you with multiple file types - .png, .pdf, .ai, .eps, etc. You want to make sure you receive scalable graphics (such as .ai and .eps) so that whether you are placing it on a business card, website, or even a 40-foot banner - it will look crisp and beautiful.

Until now, most websites were designed to disseminate information on each page. However, an updated webpage is incomplete on its own. No matter what you do on your website, you will need to communicate with your users. Simply put, to receive a good match with a user, you need to have a form on your website that sends out an email. This functionality involves having a program to convert a web form into an email and then send it out to the appropriate recipient.

Another necessary function is to be able to search within the website to help users find the information they need as quickly as possible. Making a website searchable means that it needs to be created not just as static text, but in conjunction with a database. This is a very different process than creating websites in the past.

Offer weekly pricing and promotions

If your website exists to support a retail location or you sell online and have unique promo codes, this is an easy way to keep people coming back. If the only way for them to get discounted pricing is to visit your website, you have added value.

Write useful blogs about related areas of expertise

When you regularly blog about areas relevant to your business you are providing a useful resource for customers. Be it handyman solutions, tech tips (as is our case), or any number of things - knowledge is power. Giving that power to your customers is added value for your website.

It is also important to create “evergreen content” when you are creating blog content. “Evergreen content” is content that doesn’t become outdated with time. When it comes to dictionaries, it might be better to say that you use them rather than read them. No one reads a dictionary or a phone book from the first page to the last page.

So, is a website a book or a dictionary? Let's assume that a website is used to introduce a company. In this case, it would be safe to say that no one would read the website from the beginning to the end. This means that the website is not a book, or at least not one that will entertain the reader. In this case, I think it is correct to think of it as you would a dictionary.

A dictionary is designed to make it easy to find the information you need. Your website is also designed in a way that visitors can easily find the information they need. Is the information organized? Is the information arranged in a way that matches the level of need? When you think about it, there is a difference in the design concept between a website for distributing information and a marketing page for creating a corporate image.

PSPINC What's New Newsletter Vol.78 "DENREI Project"

Pacific Software Publishing, Inc. has developed a new social communication tool called DENREI. This system will be available as part of our beta release soon. In this newsletter, I would like to briefly introduce this system.

DENREI is the Japanese word for messenger. However, this is not a messaging application or system like WhatsApp or Line. When you register with DENREI, an email address of xxxxxxxx@denrei.com will be created. This is an email address that only the registrant has, and you can set it up in your current mailer application to use as an email account. However, this email account can only send emails to other @denrei.com accounts.

Over on denrei.com, you will see currently registered users to whom you can subscribe if you are interested in receiving their communications. Once your subscription is approved, you can email each other using your @denrei.com email accounts. You can think of this as a closed email connection - this is where denrei.com comes in.

When you send an email to your own @denrei.com email account, the content will be emailed to all of your DENREI followers. This is the same as publishing a newsletter. Of course, the followers who receive your email can reply to the communication. In this case, the email will only be sent to the DENREI user who performed the initial broadcast and not to every other follower.

Think of DENREI as an email-based social network. Since it is email-based, we, the system administrators, are not able to ban or censor the content. Also, messages will not be delivered to non-subscribers. It is truly a system for delivering messages as a messenger. This is an unprecedented Internet system, but we believe it is similar to the way messages are delivered in the real world.

It is currently free to apply to join this invite-only community. Once we receive your application we will issue you a signup link. So please try it out and let us know what you think.

Being able to reach out to customers is important, but you don’t need to be a professional marketer to do it. Below are a few tips for your email marketing efforts.

Keep It Short

The average attention span of users is short and it’s’ important to grab their attention right away. Providing a lot of content for them to read is a quick way to have them delete your message and move on. In addition, a large number of people will be checking their email from their mobile devices. Longer content leads to more scrolling and potentially burying important information “below the fold”.

Use a Single Column Layout

With websites, we often create intricately crafted multi-column layouts to organize and arrange data. While this is great for the modern web and useful for certain types of websites, that philosophy doesn’t carry over to emails for a couple of reasons.

You should be designing for mobile devices. We already talked about this, but remember, a large number of your customers reading your email marketing messages will be doing so from a mobile device. Creating an experience geared towards those users that also work for desktop computers usually leads us to a clean single-column layout.

Email clients don’t place nice. Depending on what device, email software, or service you are using, they will render emails differently and support different technologies. The more complex your email layout, the more room for error exists. Sticking to a single-column layout increases the odds that you are giving everyone a consistent experience across the board.

Have a Call to Action

Regardless of the type of email marketing you are doing, you will most certainly have a goal. Whether it is to have customers call your business, visit your store for a sale, purchase something online, or give you contact information for lead generation efforts.

To achieve these goals you will want to have a “‘call to action” that is clearly defined. Use clear speech and visual cues to grab the user’s attention and have them follow through on your desired action.
