Collaboration of Interra USA and ABE DESIGN From June Issue of Lighthouse!

Hello, everyone. Interra USA is back! Have you ever heard of a local magazine called “Lighthouse”? Lighthouse is distributed to Japanese restaurants and grocery stores in some major cities in the U.S. and we believe some people might have had chances to get to know it already. It is our pleasure to announce to you that Tatami mats from Interra USA were introduced as one of the features, “Tips to improve everyday lives from Q&A” on Lighthouse which was released in June for the Seattle/Portland edition!

Read the actual article (Page 8)

This blog is written to give you a better understanding of the feature article from Lighthouse.

Tatami Mat in the U.S.?

Interra USA has expanded the business by mainly importing Japanese building materials to the U.S. We have been working hard on sales of Tatami Mats as our new projects for half a year. You might be wondering why we sell Tatami Mats in the U.S. We discovered that there are only a few dealers who make and sell Tatami Mat in the U.S. by talking with a lot of people from Japanese carpenters, building contractors, and construction firms and hearing that they have a difficult time finding the best Tatami. Only the problem with Tatami was that it is not affordable even though there is a growing demand for it because there are a lot of Japanese people living in the U.S. especially on the West Coast. Thus, we, Interra USA, made it possible to deliver the functional and fashionable Tatami Mats which were made in Japan at Daiken Corporation to as many people as we can by utilizing regular air freight from Japan to the U.S. effectively and by keeping the expense to the minimum.

Functions of Tatami Mats

Some people might say “I want to have Tatami in my house but I don’t know any construction firms which have Tatami” or “I want to create an atmosphere of a combination of Japanese tradition and Western modernity with doing DIY projects.” Interra USA has Tatami Mats which are easy to install in rooms even to the beginner and people who do not know architecture. Our square Tatami Mat is made from washi, Japanese traditional paper, which contains a special coating, and goes well with the Western-style rooms. Compared to the traditional Tatami which is made from rush, our Tatami is durable enough to resist any damage, scratch, mold, and fading by coating washi paper as a process of making Tatami. It is very thin, approximately 12-13mm / 0.5 inch, and has slip-resistant on the back which makes it easy to change the atmosphere of a room by simply placing it over the original flooring. Additionally, compared to the traditional Tatami which requires some work to install due to its size of 55mm / 2.2inch, you can do DIY with Tatami as an alternative to the flooring since the thickness of our Tatami is very close to typical flooring. It is useful for those who want to change their entire flooring with Tatami.

3 tips of arranging sofa on tatami mat room

The coordination that creates a fashionable modern Japanese style

Sofas will match with the Japanese tatami rooms depending on coordination, even most people think that the sofas are usually used for western-style houses. Nowadays, people prefer relaxing on the sofa rather than sitting on the zabuton, Japanese cushion, or the zaisu, Japanese chair, placed on the tatami room.

Although, you have to be careful when choosing the design. Please use this as a tip to choose the best sofa in your tatami room, and make the space cozy and comfortable.

Check tatami mats advantages and disadvantage in the previous post

The way of choosing sofa when placing on a tatami mat

1. Choose a low seating design

https://tabroom.jp/sofa/2-seater-sofa/itm0003341/

The Japanese-style room is a space created in the traditional "floor seat" culture.
From ancient times, people have lived from a low perspective, admiring the vases displayed between the alcove and looking at the landscape of the garden from the ground window.
Nowadays, Japanese-style rooms, which are connected to the living room and Western-style rooms, are also commonly seen. Many people may prefer a modern Japanese atmosphere rather than a purely Japanese style. However, the feeling of a floor seat carved in the long history is natural for many Japanese people.

When choosing a sofa, the one with a low seating surface and a low overall height will blend into space without any discomfort.

2. Be aware of the interior composition of the entire space

A Japanese taste is easier to make a high-quality impression than a Western taste since it naturally harmonizes with space if you want to arrange the tatami mats. When in doubt, it is recommended to choose natural materials such as wood, rattan frames, and upholstered seats.

If you have a Japanese-style room that is continuous with the living room, or if you have a modern space with tatami mats, you can try using materials such as leather and irons. However, the trick is to incorporate points to the extent that you do not overdo them.

Try not to damage tatami mats

It is important to be careful not to damage the tatami mats when placing, not just the sofa, but all types of furniture on them. If you drag it, it will be scratched of course. In addition, tatami mats are softer than flooring, so even if you put furniture, it may be partially dented. The load is concentrated for the thin legs, so it is recommended to use thick legs or a design that is supported by a surface. It is also effective to lay rugs and mats, but be careful not to let the tatami mats grow mold due to moisture buildup.

Also, if you are in a situation where you can choose a new tatami mat, new construction alike, I recommend using a tatami mat made of Japanese paper. In addition to being stronger and less likely to be scratched than rush tatami mats, it also has the advantages of being "resistant to water," "difficult to discolor," and "less likely to cause mold and mites." There are plenty of color variations, so check it out if you want a modern Japanese-style room.

Coordination of popular Japanese modern living room

thread
Coordination of popular Japane...

Coordination of popular Japanese modern living room

What kind of coordination is "Japanese modern" that combines Japanese and modern?

A calm Japanese modern style that makes you feel relaxed while being fashionable and modern. The Japanese modern style is a popular style in domestic culture that creates a feeling of relaxation peculiar to Japan.
How can we incorporate such Japanese modernity into the living room?
In the first place, Japanese modern is a style that combines the elements of traditional Japanese living and the elements of "modern", which is a contemporary design. Although, there is no clear definition.

The essence of Japanese can be strengthened by laying out simple modern furniture based on fittings that make use of the original texture of wood and incorporating Japanese items such as tatami mats, shoji doors, and Japanese textiles.
Japanese-style modern is popular not only for people who have lived in a house with a Japanese-style room, but also for relaxing both physically and mentally while feeling nostalgia, and is attracting attention from foreigners as a novel and stylish space.
I would like to propose a Japanese lifestyle that suits the modern tips with some examples.

The tips of how to create a Japanese modern living room

Even if we say “Japanese modern”, there are plenty of variations that exist.
One example is the combination of using dark brown furniture and white walls. On the other hand, by using the lighter color of beige for the furniture, the room’s impression will be natural taste. With this said, the balance between “Japanese” and “Modern” will slightly change the impression.

Let’s try to decide whether you would like to make your room a natural expression by using white wood or literary contrast (or even the middle). If using matcha color or some pale colors, it will become more like Japanese style.

In addition, adding tatami mats, lights that are covered with washi (Japanese paper) or any sort of Japanese furniture will make it more authentic.

When creating a Japanese style, the texture of each material will be also important. Try not to use plastic or artificial but natural wooden materials.

Let’s see some examples below.

Example of Japanese modern style living room

You can arrange the style by using monotones of white and black and a combination of a low table with tatami mats. It is very popular to put the sofa in the current living room, but the traditional Japanese style was sitting on the floor.

It will become a more natural taste if you arrange some wooden shelf and grid. Wooden grid was often used in traditional Japanese housing for daylighting and ventilation, blindfold. Those kinds of designs will make your room more like Japanese.

Do not forget to arrange some greens in your room as well. Not just using the plants but also “bonsai” or any sort of Japanese plants will definitely express the room more authentic.

Why don’t you start arranging some small Japanese interior at first to see how cozy you feel?

Raised Tatami-floored Seating Area - Interra USA, Inc.

thread
Raised Tatami-floored Seating ...

Add Raised Tatami-floored Seating Area to Make the Room Stylish and Comfortable

For those who want to create a Japanese-style room at home, we recommend the raised tatami-floored seating area. By introducing the tatami space, you can make your room stylish and comfortable. However, some people would think, "I want to know what is attractive about the raised tatami-floored seating area and what are the concerns."

Therefore, this time I will introduce the advantages and disadvantages of the raised tatami-floored seating area.

What is raised tatami-floored seating area?

At first, raised tatami-floor seating area is a space such as a living room with a step to lay tatami mats. Incorporating Japanese and Western-styles into the same space creates a modern Japanese atmosphere and creates a fashionable space.

Advantages and disadvantages of the raised tatami-floored seating area

Let's take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of the raised tatami-floored seating area.

Advantage

1. Can make a stored place under the tatami area.
You can create storage space in the stepped part of the raised tatami-floored seating area.
It is difficult to create storage space without making the room smaller, but if you can secure the height of the tatami area, you can increase the storage space.

2. Sit down and relax on the step
One of the advantages is that you can sit on the steps of raised area and relax. When you relax in a Japanese-style room, you have the image of sitting firmly on the floor, but if you have a raised tatami area, you can easily sit down and relax. Instead of a sofa, you can sit on a tatami mat and watch TV.

3. The room will become sharp and three-dimensional
By introducing the raised tatami-floor seating area, the room will become sharpened and become a three-dimensional space.

4. Can be used as a bed
The tatami space is one step higher than the flooring, so you can use the space as a bed if you lay a futon.

5. It can be made into a semi-private room by adding a partition
It is possible to make a semi-private room by partitioning it with curtains or shoji (障子) screens. It can be used as a nap space for children, as a reception room for customers, or as a bedroom.

Disadvantage

1. Steps can also be a risk
For families who have children, small steps can be useful but also risky. There is a risk that the child may step off and get injured while playing in the step space.

2. The introduction of raised tatami-floor seating area may make you feel the room smaller
When introducing raised tatami-floor seating area, a low ceiling can put pressure on the entire room and make it feel small. It is necessary to consider the balance between the height of the ceiling and the height of the tatami area in advance.

3. Limiting the space for furniture
If you introduce a raised tatami space, the area for the furniture will be limited accordingly.

4. Not suitable for barrier-free
Barrier-free is to create a comfortable environment for the elderly and people with disabilities as much as possible by eliminating steps and adding handrails.

Conclusion

This time, I have introduced the advantages and disadvantages of and the raised tatami-floored seating area.

Certainly, there are disadvantages, but there are many advantages such as more storage, a modern Japanese atmosphere in the room, and a sofa that can be used instead.

Why don't you consider introducing a raised tatami-floored seating area to your home?

What is Wabi-Sabi? - Interra USA, Inc.

thread
What is Wabi-Sabi? - Interra ...

What is Wabi-Sabi?

An easy-to-understand explanation of the aesthetic sense unique to Japanese people.

1. In the first place, what is Wabi-Sabi?
1.1 Meaning of Wabi
1.2 Meaning of Sabi
2. How to use Wabi-Sabi
2.1 When do you use "Wabi-Sabi"?
3. Wabi-Sabi spreading to the world

Tea utensils that feel simple. The beauty you feel when you see the garden surrounded by silence. Japanese people tend to use the word "Wabi-Sabi" to describe it. This "Wabi-sabi" can be imagined as Japanese, but most people honestly don't know what it means. This time, I investigated the origin of "Wabi-sabi" and its relationship with the tea ceremony and Japanese garden.

1. In the first place, what is Wabi-Sabi?

Wabi-sabi is a uniquely Japanese aesthetic sense. For example, it is an image of one noun that is good for being simple and quiet and imperfect, but in reality, it is a combination of two nouns, Wabi and Sabi. Each one seems to have a different meaning. First, let's look at each meaning.

1.1 Meaning of Wabi
Wabi is written as "侘び" and is a noun form of the verb "わぶ". Originally, it meant "sadness and annoyance that I couldn't think of". Since the Muromachi period, my own disappointment and poverty (who seems to be suffering from a significant shortage of money and goods) have come to have a positive meaning and content to accept the situation that is not what I want and to actively try to settle down.

It's a word that expresses the spiritual abundance of trying to enjoy the situation without pessimism.

1.2 Meaning of Sabi
Sabi is written as "寂び" and is a noun form of the verb "さぶ". According to the "Japanese Ancient Dictionary", it is described as "one of the typical beauty of Japanese classical art. A combination of astringency as a phenomenon and loneliness related to Beauty. Against the background of unconventional and lonely feelings, it was valued across genres such as Japanese poems, verbs, and tea." To put it a little more simply, this is "the feeling of oldness, tranquility, and withered things."

Unlike Wabi, which expresses spirituality, Sabi seems to be a concept that regards the change in which the inner essence appears superficially as beauty.

After that, the aesthetic sense of "Wabi-sabi" spreads in connection with the Zen Buddhism that was introduced from China. Since the Muromachi period, the idea of seeking the essence of Zen Buddhism has spread to samurai and intellectuals and has had a cultural impact, such as the dry landscape garden, which expresses the flow of water with stones and sand crests.

2. How to use Wabi-Sabi

Now that I understand the meanings of Wabi and Sabi, let's see how to use them.

2.1 When do you use "Wabi-Sabi"?

- When it comes to old buildings, the decoration of wooden parts has pain and blue-green rust that can be made of copper. When expressing it, people say, "This temple surrounded by tranquility has no gorgeous decoration, but it feels like Wabi-Sabi."

- When people see the moss growing on the stone, "Tsukubai", people think about not only the beauty of greenery but also the time it takes for it to grow. And some people will feel a sense of stability due to the characteristics of stones that do not change even after decades. In such a case, it is expressed as "I feel Wabi-Sabi from this stone, and when I look at it, my heart calms down."

- Imagine the fragility of the autumn leaves, the loneliness of the remaining branches, and the harshness of the coming winter. And people say, "I feel Wabi-sabi of the luster on the autumn leaves and the fallen leaves."

As mentioned above, Wabi-Sabi seems to be used when one's emotions sway quietly concerning an event or space.

3. Wabi-Sabi spreading to the world

The word "Wabi-sabi" is also understood in English by Wabi-Sabi. It is often used by foreign visitors as a synonym for words when tourists express Japan or when introducing Japanese culture overseas. Lastly, I would like to introduce the people who spread "Wabi-sabi" and "Zen" to the world.

The first is Tenshin Okakura, a Japanese scholar. In "The Book of Tea (茶の本)", introduces the spirituality of the Japanese people as well as their relationship with "Zen" and Taoism.

The second is Bernard Leach, a potter who was also involved in the Japanese folk art movement. He describes Wabi-Sabi in his book, "The Unknown Craftsman: A Japanese Insight into Beauty (柳宗悦評論集)."

Next is a writer/editor named Leonard Koren. In his book "Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets & Philosophers (わびさびを読み解く)", he described the unclear sense of "Wabi-sabi" is a modern style called modernism. He published a book that tried to verbalize it by comparing it with ideas.

Lastly, I would like to introduce Steve Jobs, one of the founders of Apple Inc. in the United States. He is devoted to "Zen" and looks up to a priest of the Soto sect as his teacher. The products he made are extremely sophisticated and strongly influenced by "Zen". His devotion was described in Steve Jobs (written by Walter Isaacson) and others, and his spirituality was transmitted to the world.

In this way, the concept of "Wabi-sabi" became the aesthetic sense of Japan and spread throughout the world!

Tatami Mats Advantages and Disadvantages

thread
Tatami Mats Advantages and Di...

High heat insulation is attractive!
Advantages and disadvantages of tatami mats

Tatami has been used in Japan for a long time and has various charms as a flooring material. Let's take a closer look at the advantages and disadvantages of tatami mats.

Advantages: Excellent heat insulation and humidity control performance

Tatami, which is made from a rush, contains air in each material and has high heat insulation performance. Since it can take in a lot of air with low thermal conductivity, it can block the cold air coming up from under the floor.

Tatami also has the function of absorbing and releasing moisture in the air. During the rainy season, the tatami mats absorb moisture, which keeps the humidity in the room low, and during the dry winter, it releases moisture to prevent the humidity from dropping.

Advantages: Relaxing rush scent

Rush, the raw material for tatami mats, contains various aromatic components. The charm of tatami is that you can expect a high relaxing effect depending on the scent.

However, since the scent and properties of tatami mats are lost over time, it is not expected to be very effective over the years.

The time to replace the surface of the mat is about 10 years.

Disadvantages: Difficult to clean and manage

One of the disadvantages of a tatami room is the difficulty of maintenance. It is easier to get dirty than flooring, and if you spill a drink, it will soak in, so you must wipe it off immediately.

Regular ventilation and cleaning are also important to maintain the performance of tatami mats. In particular, if the product is left with water such as dirt, dust, and sweat accumulated in it, mites and mold are likely to occur, which may accelerate deterioration.

How to make good use of the tatami room

Tatami and flooring have different advantages, but if you have never lived in a Japanese-style room before, you may not know how to arrange the tatami room.

Here, we will show you how to turn a tatami room into a comfortable space like a Western-style room.

Place the bed and arrange it in a stylish bedroom

If you're really worried about dents, you can also lay a carpet under the bed or use a "floor bed" without legs.

About breathability, you can take measures by choosing a floor bed with a slatted floor.

Flooring part of tatami mats with tiles and carpets

If you are particular about the appearance of the flooring, you can also lay floor tiles made of wooden boards one by one on the tatami mats.

There is also a type that can be laid directly on the tatami mat without using adhesives, so it is possible to easily create a flooring space.

Besides, there is a flooring carpet as an item that can turn a wide range into flooring. It refers to a carpet whose surface is made of wood, and because the lining is made of cloth, it is a major feature that it can be laid without damaging the tatami mats.

Many of them are insect-proof and mold-proof, and if you are careful not to make the room too humid, you can prevent the growth of mites and mold.

Things to keep in mind when considering tatami mats

-Tatami has excellent heat insulation and humidity control
-Tatami requires regular maintenance
-Flooring is friction resistant and easy to clean
-Flooring has less heat insulation than tatami mats
-You can use it like a Western-style room even in a tatami room with a bed or carpet

Tatami Mat Checkered Pattern - Ichimatsu Shiki

thread
Tatami Mat Checkered Pattern ...

What is Checkered Pattern 市松敷き (Ichimatsu Shiki)

写真写真

The placement shown in the image above is called "checkered pattern".
This kind of arrangement can be done with only one type of tatami color!

A checkered pattern was used in ancient Japanese ornaments.
Such as the squares on the chessboard have a black and white pattern for each square.

Ichimatsu pattern was used in the emblems of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics. The two logos use a modified version of the Ichimatsu pattern, using three types of rectangular shapes. It incorporates the message of “harmony and diversity” brought by the collaboration between different countries and cultures.

A combination of tatami mats and checkered patterns

In recent years, the method of laying tatami mats to express a checkered pattern has become popular. Tatami mats are often thought to be old-fashioned may look fashionable if they are checkered. (Even if it's not a checkerboard, there is a cool way to lay it originally..!)

A checkered pattern can be expressed even with a single color (one type per color).
Frequently asked inquiries about checkerboard "I would like to order a checkered pattern.
Do I have to choose two colors, a light color, and a dark color?"
I get a question like this.
Of course, there are cases where two colors are used, but the above picture seems to have two colors side by side, but only one color tatami mat is used. The way light is reflected changes and the colors of adjacent tatami mats look different.

Important Point of Ichimatsu Pattern

写真

The appearance will differ depending on the angle at which the tatami mats are viewed and the degree of light hitting (light rays), so if you place it as shown in the image above, it will not necessarily look like this.
However, please be assured that you can make an Ichimatsu pattern by alternating the directions of adjacent tatami mats.

We would like everyone to experience the beauty that you can feel with the eyes.
